Cougars lose to Mounties
NEW MARKET--The North Putnam Cougars' football team waited nearly two extra hours to play Friday night because of a nearby storm that delayed the start.
The Cougars travelled to Southmont high school and lost to the Mounties 28-14.
North Putnam showed vast improvements from its game last week against Edgewood, but it could not make enough plays by the end of the game.
"I thought our effort was good," coach Greg Barrett said. "We've got to figure out what we're going to do with some kids, figure out some positions and help ourselves out. We never quit."
Freshman Ethan Christy set up the first Cougar touchdown late in the third quarter by catching a 32-yard pass completion on a fourth and ten yards to go play. Junior Blake Everts finished the drive off by running the ball into the end zone from 13 yards out. This brought the Cougars closer at 21-6.
After allowing another Mountie touchdown, Christy ran the ball in from eight yards out and Everts ran the ball in for the two-point conversion. This came too late in the game with just over three minutes left to go.
"It comes down to wanting to do it," Barrett said. "We had that discussion tonight. We will get three or more kids playing then three or more that are not the next play. Once we put it all together and become a unit, we're going to be really good."
