Cougars get win before county

CLOVERDALE--One final night before the girls' county golf tournament the North Putnam Cougars and South Putnam Eagles teed off against each other at Clover Meadows. The Cougars got the best of their county rival beating them by six strokes, 243-249.

"From what we've done the last couple of weeks, even though we haven't won any meets, we reduced our scores," Cougars' coach Linda Patrick said. "From that I would say I'm a little disappointed how we did tonight. I'm glad it happened tonight and not tomorrow night. Maybe this will get them to refocus a little bit. Hopefully it will help them focus on our purpose out here tomorrow night."

"As a team we played pretty well," Eagles' coach Kevin Metz said. "We practice out here at Clover Meadows, but we never play the front nine, so it was different for us tonight. It's kind of a practice run for county."

Eagles' Alicia Haywood medaled with a score of 53. North Putnam's Olivia Zarate fell just short with a 55.

The scores were a little mountainous for both teams. Cougars' Jessie Cox scored a 59, Emily Harrington a 63, Taylor Dixon a 67 and Emmy Eltz and 62.

South Putnam's number one golfer Carlee Schlatter finished with a 57, Kristi Wood a 72 and Israel Polster a 67.

Harrington showed her displeasure with her performance by joking around with her team after the math.

"If you would have gave a squirrel a little, tiny golf ball and a little sack of clubs, it would have done better than me," Harrington said jokingly. "

Thursday night is the county meet with these two teams and also Greencastle and Cloverdale. The meet will take place on the front nine at Clover Meadows.

"I'm looking forward to the seniors (Cox and Zarate) getting their heads together for tomorrow night," Patrick said. "The goal is to be in the top seven. After what they did tonight they're going to have to get their heads together quick and fast and figure out what they're doing wrong."

"Hopefully playing it a second time and for a second day in a row, it will improve our chances a little bit," Metz said. "It will help us compete. We got some good teams we're playing against. We'll just kind of see how it plays out."
