Cloverdale Police Department Sgt. Charlie Hallam along with K-9 unit Chewy recently visited Cloverdael Elementary School fourth graders as part of their Red Ribbon Week activities.

CLOVERDALE -- Seeing an opportunity to help out their community during the school's annual Red Ribbon Week events, fourth graders at Cloverdale Elementary School recently chose to collect donations for the Cloverdale Police Department's K-9 unit, Chewy.

Although Chewy's daily duties include narcotics, odor recognition, tracking and criminal apprehension, Sgt. Charlie Hallam and Chewy will also be spending time at Cloverdale schools teaching educational anti-drug programs as well as helping in other ways as needed.

Fourth-grader Max Kaufman takes some time to give Chewy a friendly pat during Cloverdale Elementary School's Red Ribbon Week activities.

Since K-9 programs, including Cloverdale Police Department, rely totally on donations, Cloverdale's fourth-grade class decided to raise money as a grade level community service project.

Students worked on advertising by making a poster and handing out flyer's as well as selling doggie suckers and a bag of candy bones for $1 prior to morning announcements and during lunch hours.

Students were thrilled when Hallam brought Chewy to school so they could see him in action. Chewy demonstrated his ability to find items that are hidden. He also showed how he can apprehend criminals when one of the teachers did some role-playing.

Hallam also discussed with students the many duties he performs and his training. At the end of the session, all the students got a chance to see Chewy up close and give him a pat.

Chewy's success this past month in a search that resulted in an arrest proves what a great asset he is the community and school.

Cloverdale students encourage everyone to do what they can do support our new crime fighting K-9 team. To donate to the program persons may call Hallam at 795-6800 or drop off donations at the Town Hall, located at 154 S. Main St. in Cloverdale. Donors are asked to specify that donations are to go toward the K-9 program at the time of visit..
