REELSVILLE -- A woman was airlifted from a U.S. 40 accident scene Tuesday morning following a one-vehicle mishap.

Putnam County Sheriff's Deputy Adam Hull said local emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene at 11:15 a.m. following reports of a one-vehicle accident on U.S. 40 near the Putnam-Clay county line.

Hull said an unidentified woman was traveling westbound on U.S. 40 near the county line when for unknown reasons her Chevrolet passenger car crossed over into the eastbound lanes, traveled into a ditch and struck a tree.

"All we know is that she was in the westbound lane," Hull explained. "She crossed over into the eastbound lane and went into the ditch. That's just what we got from statements."

Hull advised that he did not know the extent of the woman's injuries or why they necessitated her being flown via helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital.

A two-year-old boy was also in the vehicle at the time. However, the toddler appeared to be in good health following the accident. The child was picked up from the scene by his father who works at Great Dane near Brazil.

Assisting at the scene were the Reelsville Volunteer Fire Department, Operation Life and Seniour's Towing.
