Cascade wins final WCC track meet

As the dark clouds rolled in, the 2015 West Central Conference meet was finishing at South Putnam High School. The boys in the 4x400 relay were racing the incoming storm as much as each other.

Fortunately the match concluded before the storm with Cascade winning both girls' and boys' West Central Conference titles. The Cadet boys had 114 and the girls had 92.

Greencastle's girls' finished second with 71 points just ahead of South Putnam with 67. North Putnam's ladies finished just behind the Eagles with 66 points and Cloverdale finished fourth with 37.

The South Putnam boys earned second place in the WCC with 63 and they just edged Greencastle who had 61. Cloverdale was also in the mix earning third place with 58. North Putnam earned fourth with 36.

All of the Putnam County schools had standout moments in the final WCC meet.

In the girls' 100-meter dash Tiger Cub Kat King's time of 13.51 edged out North Putnam's Emily O'Neal for a first-place finish.

O'Neal however came out on top in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.47.

"Emily O'Neal had a great race in the 200," NPHS coach Kevin Lutes said. "She's got a natural ability to remain calm and not panic during a race. Especially for a freshman, it's pretty incredible."

GHS' Corrie Romer took second-place in between two cadets with a time of 1:04.35.

In the 800-meter run it was South Putnam's turn, when Maddie McHugh earned a conference title, beating out two Cadets with a time of 2:37.54.

Putnam County went one, two and three in the 1,600-meter run when Greencastle's Grace Smith, South Putnam's Maddie Egold and Cloverdale's Tori Szaley recorded times of 5:47.81, 5:48.34 and 6:02.72 respectively.

The Lady Tiger Cubs swept the distance events when Arianna Pershing's time of 12:39.93 won the 3,200-meter run.

County record holder Ariel Higgins of South Putnam took first in the 100-meter hurdles with a 16.78 time, ahead of Ashyln Cooke and Shelby Walker of North Putnam.

Higgins won the 300-hurdles as well with a time of 49.83.

The Tiger Cubs earned first in the 4x100 relay despite the strong push by North Putnam to earn second, thanks in large part to Aleah Duncan on the third leg.

Cascade took the 4x400 by more than nine seconds, however, South Putnam was six seconds better than Cascade in the 4x800 winning with a time of 10:34.04.

Greencastle's Allison White cleared a high jump of 4-08 and beat county champion Deborah Cheatham and a Cadet by judges decision.

In the pole vault Cougar record-holder Kayla Clodfelter tied the meet record at 9-00 as did county record-holder Sam Atwood of Cloverdale. Clodfelter took the win via judge's decision.

"Watching Kayla Clodfelter win pole vault her senior year at this final conference meet was especially exciting," Lutes said. "She had her mind set on it after placing second at County. She knew exactly what she needed to fix, and worked the past two days getting focused and ready."

Cloverdale took top spot in the long jump with Clare Plamondon's jump of 15-00.50.

Adri Millican earned first in the shot, winning with throw of 33-07.50 beating Mia Stevens of Greencastle by seven inches.

Laura Worthington capped off her county championship by winning conference in discus with a throw of 96-07.

For the boys North Putnam's Isaac Guerendo won each the 100 and 200-meter dash beating Putnam County champs Tucker Lowe of North Putnam and Timmy Parker of South Putnam in the respective events.

Cascade also won the 400-meter dash with Nick Blundell of Cloverdale earning second.

Cloverdale got the top spot in the 800-meter run thanks to Evan Monnett's time of 2:03.90.

Kieffer Vittetow earned the Eagles a win in the 1,600 and he got the second-place behind a Cadet in the 3,200-meter run.

In the hurdles, it was Tyler Kaeff of Cloverdale winning the 110-hurdles with a time of 16.83 and Kaeff also came in second in the 300-hurdles.

North Putnam earned the win in the 4x100 relay with a time of 45.67 in front of Cloverdale who recorded a time of 46.21.

Cloverdale then earned the 4x400 relay title with a time of 3:34.91. Cascade however took the crown in the 4x800 relay.

In the field events J.T. Matthews's high of 6 feet in the high jump won the event for Greencastle and Chris Moghadam took the pole vault with a height of 12-06.

Cascade took the top two spots in the long jump with Timmy Parker earning third. Austin Mitchell took the shot put crown with his toss of 48-05.75 and Joey Masters of South Putnam claimed the title in discus with a throw of 124-10.

The four Putnam County schools will be at Terre Haute North for the IHSAA Sectional on Tuesday, May 19.
