PUTNAMVILLE -- Veteran Department of Correction administrator Brian Smith recently returned to Putnamville Correctional Facility as superintendent.

Smith took over at Putnamville in late May after serving at Plainfield Correctional Facility, where he most recently worked as superintendent.

He succeeded Superintendent Stan Knight at Putnamville. Knight, who had served as Putnamville superintendent since 2011, essentially swapped positions with Smith, taking over as superintendent at Plainfield.

Smith previously worked at Putnamville Correctional Facility from 2008-2011, serving as a unit team manager and then as assistant superintendent.

He started his career in corrections at the Marion County Juvenile Center in the late 1970s and has held various positions in several facilities with the Indiana Department of Correction, including correctional officer, substance abuse counselor, re-entry counselor, unit team manager, assistant superintendent of operations and re-entry and superintendent at Plainfield.

In the last 10 years, Smith has served in a number of capacities around western Indiana, including stops at Rockville Correctional Facility and Wabash Valley Correctional Facility in Carlisle.

A native of Sweetser in Grant County, Smith has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Western Michigan University.

He now resides in Greencastle.
