Local runners perform well at Northview Invitational
BRAZIL -- High finishes for Putnam County runners were the order of the day at the Northview Invitational on Tuesday.
In the girls' race, Greencastle's Emma Wilson took top honors with a time of 18:36. She was joined in the top four by teammates Arianna Pershing in third and Seely Stoffregen in fourth.
On the boys' side, South Putnam's Kieffer Vittetow ran second in a time of 17 minutes, followed by Greencastle's Clayton Wilson in third.
In the team event, the Greencastle girls' took top honors, followed by South Putnam in second. North Putnam fielded an incomplete team.
The Greencastle boys ran second behind Northview, with South Putnam finishing fifth. North Putnam was incomplete.
Others scoring for the Lady Tiger Cubs included Katerina King in 11th and Sydney Lewis in 12th.
Maddie McHugh led the charge for the South Putnam girls, finishing seventh. Teammate Julianna Delano was right on her heels in eighth.
Alanna Nunez was the low Cougar runner, finished 28th.
For the Greencastle boys, Cameron Lewis joined Wilson in the top 10, finishing ninth.
For the Eagles, Michael Crossman finished 15th.
Caleb Duncan was the lone North Putnam runner, finishing 21st.
Cougar coach Kevin Lutes said the weather may have slowed the runners, but he continues to like what he sees from his small squad.
"I think the warmer weather was a factor contributing to slower times, but I saw mostly good effort from our athletes," Lutes said. "We've just need to get stronger mentally if we're expecting to get faster. We have a break the rest of the week from meets, so it'll be nice to get some hard workouts in."
Greencastle will be back in action on Saturday, traveling to the Decatur Central Invitational at 9:30 a.m. The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Sept. 26 at the Greencastle Invitational. South Putnam is out of action even longer, with no meets until it hosts the Putnam County Meet at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
