MUNCIE -- An alleged hazing incident at a football camp at DePauw University last summer has resulted in three former Delta High School students facing criminal charges in Delaware County.

The juveniles, who were expelled from school after the allegations were raised last summer, are accused of abusing fellow students at a football camp conducted at DePauw last June. Indiana State Police conducted the subsequent investigation.

The incident was characterized by Delaware County Prosecutor Jeffrey Arnold as an "attempt at hazing that was way out of control."

As juveniles, the names of those being charged were not released. Two of the boys involved are now 17, while the third is 16.

Authorities said one suspect is being charged with nine counts of battery and four counts of criminal confinement.

Another suspect faces three counts of battery and seven counts of confinement, while the third defendant is being charged with three counts of battery and two counts of confinement.

When asked whether the alleged assaults were sexual in nature, Arnold said the actions "bordered on it, certainly."

Last summer, Delaware County officials reportedly discussed the allegations with the Putnam County Prosecutor's Office since the football camp was conducted in Greencastle.

"In a juvenile case," Arnold told the Muncie Star Press, "a prosecution can be held in the county where the act occurs or where the juvenile resides. They (Putnam County authorities) deferred to us."
