Turn, Turn, Turn

The courthouse square in Greencastle certainly isn't the easiest place for truck drivers to navigate. In fact, one semi driver once stood up at a city meeting and complained that the corner of Washington and Jackson was the "biggest bottleneck" between Chicago and Florida. While that might be exaggerating a bit, another semi driver did himself no favors with this recent maneuver, attempting to turn left onto Washington Street from the east side of the square (Indiana Street). That means having to thread the needle between cars parked along Washington Street and westbound traffic simultaneously coming onto the square.

  • More than one time when the semi's come from east on Washington and turn North on Jackson they hit the curb and blow a tire. It sounds like a cannon. I am sure that is quite and expensive turn for them. Other times, depending on the traffic, it takes several minutes for them to accomplish turning north. You are right. I am sure they wish there was a way to avoid the Greencastle town square.

  • I always wondered if there wasn't a way to make some streets one way like Elletsville and Bedford to help the flow, the talk always seems to be about some sort of major bybass which would be terribly costly and a huge waste of land.

  • It should be illegal for semi's to be on the square anyway. There is a way around it....isn't that one reason for IN 240?

  • They need to stay on Jackson all the way to veterans. It's already there. And now they are using Shadow lawn as a shortcut to and from the east side. That's passing through two school zones. And tearing up the asphalt.

  • I thought Veteran's Highway was supposed to help with the semi's; It is way to dangerous for them to come through town. I hope it doesn't take someone getting hurt or killed before they change this.

  • Maybe people don't realize Jackson south of the square and Veterans Highway west of Bloomington are city streets, not a state highway. INDOT would have to take over maintenance on them, and abandon the current route through town. Not likely to happen! And don't forget about the 20 MPH limit on South Jackson.

  • Part of the problem is the location of the overhead direction signs. Look at the location as you come upon the square, you'll see what I'm referring to.

  • I think some of you forgot how all of the stores get their deliverys. If the city would stop putting all the extra curbs that stick out that makes some of these streets so narrow. Everything can't be order on the internet and have the mail man bring it to your door step!!
