USDA Summer Feeding Program to go through July

Sunday, June 26, 2016
Banner Graphic/nick wilson As part of this year's USDA Summer Feeding Program, volunteers hand out free meals to children and adults (who had the option to buy a meal for $2) last week at Robe-Ann Park.

The USDA Summer Feeding Program will continue to provide free meals to children in Greencastle through the end of July.

Debbie Carrico, who administers the program and also serves as the director of food service for Greencastle Schools, said the response to the program, rolled out this year in late May and early June, has been positive, with food being served at three GCSC schools, as well as through mobile locations at Robe-Ann Park and the Putnam County Public Library.

"As of right now Ridpath, Deer Meadow and the high school are doing very well on numbers," Carrico said. "The mobile unit is doing well at the park but not so much at the library but will remain there through July."

Local youths are encouraged to utilize any of the sites for meals.

Carrico also specified that the program is open to all children up to 18 years old, not just those from low-income families.

Thus far, nearly 4,000 meals have been served since the program began.

The schedule for the Monday through Friday program is as follows:

* Mobile Library: Lunch only, 12:55-1:30 p.m.

* Mobile Park: Lunch only, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

* Deer Meadow: Breakfast, 8-10 a.m.; Lunch 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

* Ridpath: Breakfast, 8-10 a.m.; Lunch, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

The program will continue through July 29 at these four locations, with service not continuing past June at Greencastle High School.

Due to the "free" nature of this program, rules and regulations will apply:

* Only children aged 18 and younger are served free meals.

* All adults aged 19 and older must pay $2 per meal.

* Individuals aged 19 and older may not consume or share any part of a child's meal.

* No meals will be served on the Fourth of July.

* Meals are only served during published serving times.

* Food left on a sharing table (where available) may only be eaten on site and only by children aged 18 and younger.

* All meals must be consumed at the site unless the sponsor has authorized participants to leave a site with only one of the following meal components: fruit, vegetable or grain.

* Meal substitutions due to a life-threatening allergy or disability must be supported by a statement from a recognized medical authority that includes the required alternate foods.

* Dispose of all trash before leaving the site.
