Gerald R. Purcell

Gerald R. Purcell, 81, of Greencastle, passed away Monday, July 25, 2016 at 12:18 p.m. at the home of his niece, with his family by his side.

He was born Oct. 26, 1934 in Annapolis, Ind., the son of Archie Purcell and Merrie Kiger Purcell.

Mr. Purcell served his country in the USMC for 22 years, retiring as an SSgt in 1975.

Gerald was united in marriage to Beatrice Cooksey Purcell and together they raised their four children.

He was a member of the Greencastle Eagles Lodge.

He enjoyed fishing with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Beatrice; a grandson, Michael Nelson; and brothers Walter, Willard, Archie Jr, Robert and George and sisters, Maxine Taylor, Betty Purcell, and Lou Ella Scroggins.

Survivors include children, Sarah Wiggington (Gary) of Indianapolis, William "Eddie" Purcell (Lori) of Brazil, Darlene Purcell of North Carolina, and Lisa Purcell of Oklahoma; grandchildren Patrick Purcell, Sabrina Purcell, Brooke Bowling, Van Lavadie, Devon Bowling, Emma Purcell, Sarah Dawn Moulton, Harvey Moulton, Damon Brankey, Brian Reeves and Edward Reeves; several great-grandchildren; brother John Purcell (Barbara) of Alabama; caregiver and niece Deborah Barnett (Robert) of Greencastle; many other nieces, nephews and extended family.

He requested cremation with a memorial service to be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3 at Calcutta Cemetery. Rev. Curtis Mitchell will be officiating.

Military graveside honors will be provided by American Legion Post 2 and VFW Post 1127 and also the United States Marine Corps.
