The Greencastle Summer Music Festival closes the book Wednesday, Aug. 16 on its 12th season of "bringing the community with friends making music for friends) with a concert featuring the genre-combining music of DePauw University alum Joel Karabo Elliott, an American musician who has lived for several years in South Africa.

The free 7:30 p.m. concert in the sanctuary of Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church is open to all and will feature music from his latest album, "Roots Grown Deep."

"I'm excited to have Joel conclude this summer's music for us," said Eric Edberg, the DePauw music professor who founded the festival in 2005 and along with Bobbie Lancaster serves as one of the volunteer artistic directors.

"This has been our most diverse season ever, with classical, jazz, blues, pop, folk music and the amazing cross-cultural creations of the Silk Road Project Global Musician Workshop faculty and participants, and now Joel. His brilliant mind and unique musical gifts were treasured by the DePauw community when he was studying here. I can't wait to hear his music in person."

Elliott is a composer, musician, permaculturalist, educator and mentor in the realms of leadership, sustainable agriculture and creative community development. He was born into a diverse melting pot American family of Jamaican, Scottish, German and Russian heritage.
