Tiger Cubs win WIC tennis title
Greencastle defeated Brown County 4-1 on Saturday to win the Western Indiana Conference championship in boys’ tennis.
Sean Ramey and Yuzi Mozawa picked up singles wins for the Tiger Cubs, while the doubles teams of Nathan Gobert-Elijah Lewis and Logan Wood-Jack Riggle were also victorious.
Gobert and Lewis made quick work of their opponents in two sets, while No. 1 singles Jed Fajt lost in straight sets.
The other three matches all went three sets. Mozawa and Wood-Riggle both dropped their second set, while Ramey, already down a set, trailed in the second by four games at one point.
Regardless, coach Kevin Rowe felt better about all three matches going three sets.
“The guys getting into the third set, whether they won or lost, they needed that breather and that was enough to get them back on track,” coach Rowe said.
The coach was also impressed, though not surprised, with the way his guys supported each other.
That was especially obvious when, with the best-of-five match already in hand at 3-1, the rest of the team lined the fence, cheering Mozawa to his victory.
“We 100 percent support one another all the time until the last match is over, varsity and junior varsity,” Rowe said. “It’s all one big family.”
The Tiger Cubs won the West Division championship, while Brown County won the East Division championship.
“As always, I am very proud of our team,” coach Kevin Rowe said. “They continue to battle every point, game, and match. We have worked extremely hard so far this season and continue to set goals and accomplish them.
“We are very excited about where we can go from here.”
