Howard R. Hedge

Howard R. Hedge, 92, of Roachdale, passed away at The Waters of Greencastle, on Thursday, March 2, 2017.

He was born on March 30, 1924 in Putnam County to the late Harry A. and Olive May (Morphew) Hedge.

On Sept. 23, 1945 Howard and Lela M. Eggers were married in Putnam County, and she survives.

Howard was a member of the Roachdale Fire Department where he served as chief for many years.

He retired from TDS in 1986 after 32 years working in the central office. Howard also drove an ambulance for many years.

He was the former president of Roachdale Town Board, received the I.V.F.A. Midwest Award, one of the founders of PMH ambulance service, a charter member of the Optimist Club, recipient of the Governor's Award, and served on the Park Board and Library Board. He also served as a deputy coroner and with the Civil Defense.

Howard is survived by his wife, Lela M. Hedge; daughter, Marcia (Charles) Wells, Greencastle; son, Robert (Sherry) Hedge, Greencastle; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Estel, Herman, Paul, Dale, James and Maynard Hedge; and sister Virginia Ruth Hedge.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 6 at Servies and Morgan Funeral Home, 102 E. Washington St., Roachdale, with grandson, Christopher Wells (ordained minister) officiating. Burial will follow in Roachdale Cemetery.
