For the third time in six days, city emergency workers have responded to the scene of a gas leak.

The latest incident happened shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday on the 200 block of North Madison Street, between Columbia and Liberty streets.

The Greencastle Fire Department and Greencastle Police Department responded to the scene around 10:20 a.m. A utility crew had been digging and ruptured a natural gas line.

The 200 block of North Madison is blocked, along with the Madison-Liberty intersection. Firefighters and police officers notified residents in the area, warning those in the immediate vicinity to evacuate their homes until the situation is resolved.

Vectren officials had been notified of the situation.

City officials responded to a similar incident on the DePauw University campus on Friday, as well as another leak on Sunday.

  • Not much information here. Who was digging and why? Didn't they get utilities located first? Why has this happened 3 times in 6 days? There could be a major disaster if someone doesn't get a handle on this.

  • Call 811 Before you Dig! It says it is a utility crew doing the work. Think they need to review their work process, especially if this is the same crew on all 3 incidents.
