Tox-Away Day set Saturday at Area 30

Monday, May 1, 2017

The Putnam County Tox-Away Day is scheduled for Saturday, May 6 from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. (rain or shine) at the Area 30 Career Center (across from Walmart) on State Road 240 in Greencastle.

Tox-Away Days are annual events sponsored by West Central Solid Waste District that provide Putnam, Parke and Montgomery county residents with an opportunity to safely and inexpensively dispose of household hazardous waste.

Residents are asked not to arrive prior to 7:45 a.m. as it interferes with event set-up and creates traffic congestion. The event is organized to get people in and out as quickly and safely as possible, but lines should be anticipated as the event averages 600 vehicles in five hours.

Last year, more than 182 tons of toxic/hazardous materials were safely removed from the three counties. These items, if disposed of improperly, are dangerous to the health of humans, animals and the environment. Trained personnel will unload items in a safe drive-through environment.

Electronics such as computers, cell phones, gaming consoles, etc. can no longer be thrown in the trash or landfilled. Bring your electronics and appliances to these events free of charge (exception: $20 fee for any size TV).

Tox-Away Days are an opportunity to dispose of tires that are lying around collecting water that can turn into mosquito breeding grounds (limits apply). Residents are asked not to bring latex paint for disposal as it is water-based and not hazardous. Latex paint should be dried out by mixing with equal parts of cheap kitty litter or sand and set out with your trash once it is in solid form with the lid removed.

For a complete list of items accepted go to www.westcentralswd.com and click the “Tox Away” tab and also watch for ads in your local newspaper.

Pricing has changed for tractor tires over 54 inches (refer to 2017 flyer). Small or mixed items should always be in a visible box/crate and not a dark bag or container which can be a safety hazard.

Persons unable to attend the May 6 event are welcome to attend the Tox-Away Day(s) on June 24 in Crawfordsville at North Montgomery High School or on Sept. 16 in Rockville at the Parke County 4-H Fairgrounds.

Residents can call the district office with questions at 653-2150.
