IHSAA announces softball pairings, new groupings in six sports

Monday, May 1, 2017

The Indiana High School Athletic Association announced pairings on Friday for the 2017 softball tournament, as well as the new groupings in six sports for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons.

Here is how Putnam County teams are affected:

Softball

Cascade will host the Class 2A sectional that was played at South Vermillion last year.

South Putnam plays South Vermillion in the tourney opener, with the winner playing the host and defending champion Cadets in the semifinals.

North Putnam will play Monrovia in the first round, with the winner meeting the Southmont-Cloverdale winner in the semifinals.

Greencastle will play in a six-team Class 3A sectional at Indian Creek.

The Tiger Cubs will play Indianapolis Washington in the tourney’s second game, with the winner of that game meeting the Danville-Indian Creek winner in the semifinals.

Exact dates and times have not yet been released, but the tourneys will take place during the week of May 22-26.

Football

Greencastle will remain with three other schools from the most recent alignment, with four new schools joining its sectional.

The Tiger Cubs, defending champion Danville, Tri-West and West Vigo remain together and are joined by Brown County, Sullivan, Monrovia and South Vermillion.

Monrovia and South Vermillion both are moving up from Class 2A.

Cascade, Cloverdale and North Putnam remain in the same Class 2A sectional and will be joined by Indianapolis Washington, Park Tudor, Speedway, Tipton and Western Boone.

South Putnam and Covenant Christian remain in the same Class A sectional, and are joined by the Indiana School for the Deaf and Indianapolis schools Arlington, Howe, Shortridge, Tindley and Traders Point Academy (in 2018).

Volleyball

Greencastle will be in a six-team sectional at Southmont, along with Benton Central, Crawfordsville, Lebanon and North Montgomery besides the hosts.

Cloverdale, North Putnam and South Putnam will be in a seven-team field at an undetermined site. Others in the field are Covenant Christian, Monrovia, Cascade and Western Boone.

Boys’ basketball

Greencastle will again be hosting the sectional next year, with Benton Central and Southmont (moving up from 2A) replacing Tri-West and defending champion Danville and in the field.

Other returners are Crawfordsville, Lebanon, North Montgomery and Western Boone.

South Putnam will again host a Class 2A sectional next year. Covenant Christian has replaced Southmont in this field, with Monrovia, Cloverdale and North Putnam all returning along with the hosts.

Girls’ basketball

In Class 3A, Greencastle will be in a six-team sectional with the same field as the boys — minus Western Boone.

The Stars dropped to Class 2A in girls’ basketball, and will replace Southmont in the local sectional that also includes Cascade, Cloverdale, Monrovia, North Putnam and defending champion South Putnam.

Girls’ soccer

Soccer expands to three classes this year, and Greencastle and North Putnam are in a six-team Class A sectional along with Cascade, Monrovia, South Vermillion and Southmont.

No host site has been determined.

Boys’ soccer

The Tiger Cubs are in Class 2A in boys’ soccer, and are grouped with Northview, Owen Valley, South Vermillion, Sullivan and West Vigo.

North Putnam is in Class A and is grouped with Bethesda Christian, Cascade, Covenant Christian, Covington and the Indiana Math and Science Academy.

No host sites have been determined.
