FEATURED ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Abby Walker, Cloverdale
Abby Walker is a senior at Cloverdale, who is a two-time all-county golf team selection and was on the all-county basketball team last year.
Banner Graphic: It’s easy to tell that sports are very important to you. What do you like about them the most, and what have they done for you?
Abby Walker: “They have taught me that you have to be competitive in the work force, and to try as hard as you can to succeed. I just started playing golf as a freshman. Basketball, I’ve been playing my whole life since I was extremely little. It’s my passion.”
BG: Talk about last year’s basketball season, including how tough it was to miss some time due to appendicitis.
AW: “I was excited that we made it to the sectional championship game, and we were pumped to get that far. It really crushed us to lose in the championship game. I think we’re going to come back this year as hard as we can and try to get that sectional championship. I missed seven or eight games, and that was really hard coming back. I had work 10 times harder just pushing myself, but I got back into it. At least it can’t happen again.”
BG: What other school activities do you do?
AW: “I’m in Fellowship of Christian Athletes. We meet on Wednesday mornings and talk about a lot of different things, and I really like that. I’m also in National Honor Society, and we do a lot of volunteer work through that.”
BG: What are you favorite subjects in school?
AW: “I really like strength and conditioning and math. The teacher that has helped me the most is Mr. [Jamie] Steffy. He’s been there for me both in and out of the classroom.”
BG: What are your plans after high school?
AW: “I plan on going to college, and play basketball, and I hope to go to Manchester College. I want to study business management. I’m not sure exactly what I want to do, but I would like to be a sports agent or to manage a sports team.”
BG: It seems like your family members are at every event you have. How important is that to you?
AW: “They go to everything I can think of. It doesn’t matter if the game is two hours away, they’ll be there. They support me in every thing I do. That’s really great.”
BG: Do you have any pets?
AW: “No, but I would love to have a dog.”
BG: What is your greatest fear?
AW: “Spiders. I have never gotten bitten by one, but they just scare me.”
BG: What is something you have never done before, but you would like to do someday?
AW: “I would love to try skydiving. I think that’s awesome, and I’d love to do that someday. The adrenaline rush you get from jumping would be great.”
BG: What are your favorite and least favorite foods?
AW: “Steak is my favorite food. For least favorite, I’d have to say olives.”
BG: What are your favorite kinds of TV shows, movies and music?
AW: “One Tree Hill would be my favorite TV show. It has basketball in it, and I like that about it. I’m not a really big movie fan, and I like to listen to pop music.”
BG: Talk about your overall Cloverdale career and how well it’s gone.
AW: “It’s gone extremely fast. I can’t believe I’m a senior now. It feels like yesterday that I was a freshman, and I’m sad that it’s about over. But I’m ready for the future too.”
BG: What would be considered the highlight of your career so far?
AW: “I would say setting the school record for most wins last year in basketball. That’s really cool.”
BG: Do you have any special skills?
AW: “I can juggle. I’m actually pretty good at it. I used to live in Illinois, and at my old school they taught us how to do it in P.E. It’s stuck with me ever since.”
BG: Golf season is almost over with the sectional coming up on Saturday. How does that look for you?
AW: “I think I could get out of the sectional if I keep doing what I’ve been doing. I think it’s been a pretty good season so far.”
