PREP ROUNDUP: Greencastle soccer teams sweep pair from Vikings

Greencastle’s soccer teams both met West Vigo on Tuesday and came away with victories.

The Lady Tiger Cubs hosted West Vigo and were led by captains Claire Gillen, Erin Thomas and Corinne Buchanan in a 3-0 win to improve to 5-2-1 on the season.

After a scoreless first half, positive advancements were made and the scoring began for Greencastle. Thomas was able to put all three goals in the back of the net unassisted, attempting 17 shots.

Gillen had seven saves for the game in recording the shutout.

“The team is looking forward to having continued success as the season unfolds,” coach Angie Weeks said.

The No. 11-ranked Tiger Cubs traveled to West Terre Haute in boys’ action, and recorded a 5-2 win to stay undefeated on the season at 8-0-2.

The Tiger Cubs took a 3-1 lead in the first half, and closed out the match by scoring two goals in the second half to one for the Vikings.

Senior Evan Crowe continued his outstanding season by scoring two goals and assisting on two others. Jakob Foss, Simon Foss (on a penalty kick) and Ben Parsons each added goals, while Hector Lezama, Kevin Polster and Jack Romer each had assists.

Goalie Brody Watson had eight saves.

Both Tiger Cub teams will travel to Sullivan on Saturday for their final Western Indiana Conference regular-season matches.

In other soccer:

Owen Valley 2, North Putnam 0 (boys) – The Patriots scored one goal in each half to record the win.

“It was a tight contest with neither team conceding very many good chances,” NP coach Curt Krominaker said. “Defensively we played well for most of the game. Alex Krominaker and Dane Spencer really stepped it up and controlled the middle of the pitch.

“Unfortunately we did not convert the chances we did have to put the ball in the net.”

Monrovia 2, North Putnam 0 (girls) – The Lady Cougars went to Monrovia on Tuesday evening and lost a close game.

Volleyball

Northview 3, Greencastle 0 – Northview won by scores of 25-7, 25-13 and 25-15 in Western Indiana Conference action.

The Cubs were led by Jada Amis with five kills, Jalyn Duff with 11 assists and six digs and Maggie Meyer with 12 digs. Allison Stevens added four kills and Lilly Meyer had six digs.

Monrovia 3, Cloverdale 2 — The Clovers lost a heartbreaker to Monrovia in five sets by scores of 25-19, 20-25, 25-22, 22-25, and 10-15.

“We played very intensely and aggressively,” Clover coach Traci Scott said. “We would play them point for point with several suspenseful rallies. “

Kenzie Stoltz

The Clovers were led by Kenzie Stoltz with 18 kills, 12 service points and 21 digs.

Hannah Rady added 10 service points and 38 assists, Tori Combs had eight kills and eight blocks and Hailey Thomas had 42 digs.

Morgan Goss added 21 digs. Justyce Monnett had seven service points and eight kills and Kayla Perdue had 15 digs.

“Overall, the Clovers played well,” coach Scott said. “We just have to keep the momentum going after we take the lead.”

Southmont 3, South Putnam 1 – At New Market, the Eagles fell in four sets by the scores of 22-25, 23-25, 25-19 and 14-25.

Golf

Western Boone 181, North Putnam 229 – The Lady Cougars finished out their regular season at Cool Lake against Western Boone.

This was the Cougars’ third visit to Cool Lake this year, and coach Linda Patrick said several Cougars were able to see a much improved score from their first meet of the season to their last.

Taylor Dixon couldn’t escape a trio of double bogeys and carded a 47. Both Nyiah Goff and Grace Timm shot a 58 and both dropped from their first-meet score at Cool Lake of a 67, Patrick noted. Mady Williams carded a 66 for the round.

Lily Conyer from Western Boone was the medalist with a three-over-par 38.

“I was happy to see the great improvement in Goff’s and Timm’s score over the course of the season,” Patrick said. “These scores will be of great asset as we enter the sectional play on Saturday.”

Tri-West 198, South Putnam 242 – The Lady Eagles fell to Tri-West in a dual meet at Tomahawk Hills.

“The girls struggled finding the narrow fairways, which led to scrambling their way around the course,” SP coach Kevin Metz said. “The weather conditions weren’t the best, however, both teams played in the same elements. The girls played hard, even when it wasn’t going their way.”

Drew Steffy led the Eagles with a 55, while Leighla Hazlett shot a 58, Kortnee Starks shot a 64, Alex Fanning had a 65, Reagan Ladd had a 66 and Kate McCammack shot a 67.

The Eagles will play in the sectional on Saturday at Forest Park in Brazil.

Cross country

Bruins, Clovers split — Cloverdale hosted Tri-West for a dual meet on Thursday, with the Bruins winning the girls’ race and Cloverdale winning the boys’ race.

Tri-West narrowly won the girls’ race by a 28-29 margin, led by a first-place performance from Lily Monnett. Her time was 21:59.

The Clovers dominated the boys’ race, placing four of the top five runners and seven of the top nine in a 19-44 win.

Cloverdale’s Rylan Hall was the overall winner in 18:14, followed by runnerup teammate Chase Ashcraft in 18:23.

“Solid performances from Rylan and Chase really set the tone for the boys’ team,” Clover coach Andy Tyler said. “We had a several runners set personal bests. Abel Bates, Michael Halloran and Jarren Rossok all ran well.

“On the girls’ side, Lily and Macie [Couch] had great times,” he added. “We are improving weekly and are looking forward to the big meets here at the end of the season.”
