Shark girls, Eagle boys win county titles
Greencastle’s girls and South Putnam’s boys came away winners on Saturday in the Putnam County swimming meet.
The Sharks scored 258 points to win the girls’ meet, followed by South Putnam with 195 and North Putnam with 163.
South Putnam totaled 239 points to win the boys’ meet for the first time since 1995. Greencastle was a close second with 233 points, followed by North Putnam with 134.
Greencastle coach Kent Menzel was pleased with how his team competed.
“We are very proud of all of our swimmers after a very fast and competitive Putnam County Championship,” he said. “Our women’s team was strong all day long, and that strength was led by senior Grace Gillen, who won two individual events [the 50 and 100 free] and anchored two winning relays. The relay sweep by our women was a very nice cap to the day.”
Menzel was also pleased with swims by freshman Zoe Weltz, who swam away with the 100 fly win, and was also “very happy” that Abby Meyer was able to achieve victory in the 100 back.
“All of our swimmers have worked hard this fall, and the hard work paid off,” he said.
Menzel was also happy with his men’s team.
“They swam very, very well throughout the meet, but we fell just shy of the team win,” he said. “Coach Anna Kendall has done wonderful work with the Eagle’s team, and their men were extraordinary from start to finish. I hope the fans were aware of what a phenomenal show of swimming they were able to witness.”
Seniors Preston Headley, who won the 100 breast, and Jackson Kendall, who won diving, led the charge for the Sharks.
Kendall was proud that the Eagle boys’ team broke a long title drought,and that her boys’ medley relay set a school record.
“It’s really exciting to see how competitive this meet has become,” she said. “It makes everyone of these athletes better”
Kendall was pleased that her team was confident going into the meet.
“The entire team really bought in to the idea that they could win, and despite some setbacks this week, never gave up on that idea,” she said. “They were focused on the technical components and trusted in each other to do the work of moving up the psych sheet. It was absolutely a whole-team effort, and I’m proud of all of them for taking on that responsibility with courage.
“We talk a lot about’“the courage to try and the courage to fail’ and I think each athlete embraced that idea today.
Specifically, Kendall thought several swimmers were the key to victory.
“Jake Hutcheson came straight out of the medley and really poured himself out for the win in the 2oo free,” she noted. “Jared Seidler took commanding wins in the 50 and 100 back. We had strong leadership from our seniors not only in the pool, but on the deck throughout the meet. Porter High, Justin Pitts and Ryan Neumann do fantastic job of keeping the team working together as a whole and energized.”
Kendall also recognized the efforts of several younger team\m members.
“We also had outstanding performances and buy-in from our underclassmen,” she said. “Kyle Cunningham, Evan Steffy and Sammi Jones in particular each had two phenomenal swims and continue to chip away at their PRs. Abby Teipen had a great race in the 100 breaststroke with an amazing back-half that really paid off.
