BAINBRIDGE -- A North Putnam High School student was taken into police custody Wednesday afternoon after allegedly making threats of violence against the school.

At around 1:30 p.m., a note was discovered on the wall of a boys' bathroom, making a threat of a shooting on Friday, authorities said.

Principal Jason Chew immediately contacted Roachdale Town Marshal Mike Mahoy, who in turn made the Putnam County Sheriff's Department aware of the threat. The Bainbridge Police Department also took part in the investigation.

According to a post on the school Facebook page made by Chew Wednesday evening, the student responsible was quickly identified and isolated.

The young man's parents were called and they consented to a police interview.

Deputy Matt Biggs was able to get a confession from the unidentified youth, who was then taken into police custody.

Administrative action will be taken by the school, and the investigation has been turned over to the Putnam County Prosecutor for a decision on charges.

"We are thankful for the cooperation of parents and students in this matter, we know it takes all members of our community to keep our school safe," Chew said. "North Putnam Community Schools will not tolerate threats or intimidation, and will take action against those who interrupt the purpose of school."

Citing the current national mood around school violence and threats of violence, Sheriff Scott Stockton echoed Chew's sentiments.

"The law enforcement agencies in this county are not going to tolerate this kind of behavior."
