PREP ROUNDUP: Eagles finish eighth in WIC baseball; Crum throws no-hitter

NASHVILLE — Like most high school baseball teams this time of year, the South Putnam baseball team has been busy lately due to filling up many days of the schedule with postponements from earlier in the season.

The Eagles traveled to Brown County on Tuesday for their fifth game in six days, and fell to the hosts 6-3.

South Putnam got on the board in the top of the first as Brandon Demoret was hit by a pitch with two outs. Demoret stole second and came home on a Jackson Wood single.

Brown County added three runs in the bottom of the first, two more in the third and one in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead.

South Putnam left a runner on third in the first inning, runners at first and second in the second, a runner on third in the third, stranded runners at second and third in the fourth and left runners on at first and second to end the fifth inning before they were finally able to bring home two runs in the sixth.

Hayden Switzer and Dru Teipen walked to start the sixth, with Switzer eventually coming home on a double steal and pinch-runner Hunter Croan scoring on a wild pitch.

Five South Putnam errors contributed to four unearned runs scored by Brown County.

On Monday, Dylan Crum pitched a no-hitter as South Putnam shut out Eminence 12-0.

Croan hit a home run and a single and drove in three runs, while Tanner Pistelli had two doubles and two RBI, Demoret had a double and a single with an RBI and Aiden LeBlanc and Switzer each had two singles.

Crum struck out five batters and walked two.

On Thursday, in a game for which results were previously unavailable, the Eagles lost a 6-5 heartbreaker at Rockville.

Demoret had two singles and three RBI for the Eagles, while Leblanc had a triple and two singles, and Pistelli had a triple and an RBI.

South Putnam tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the seventh as LeBlanc tripled with one out and scored on a Demoret single.

Rockville pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

Greencastle 12, Cloverdale 2 — The Tiger Cubs scored nine runs in the third inning on Monday to repeat their win over the Clovers in the county tourney finals from Saturday.

Alex Costin was the winning pitcher for the Cubs, striking out five batters and walking one while throwing a one-hitter.

Parker Watts had a double and an RBI for the Clovers.

Greencastle was led by Nick Sutherlin with two triples and two RBI, while Gus Manion had a triple and two RBI, Trey Wood had a double and three RBI and Jordan Meyer had a single and three RBI.

Austyn Pingleton and Brody Whitaker each scored two runs for the Cubs.

Cascade 15, Greencastle 5 — At Clayton, the Cadets got seven runs in the fifth inning to break open a close game and claim ninth place in the Western Indiana Conference standings.

Ethan Maier had a double for one of the four Cub hits. Brody Whitaker had a single and two RBI.

Cloverdale 5, North Putnam 4 — At Cloverdale, the hosts came up with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and hung on for a narrow win to claim 11th place in the WIC standings.

Trailing 4-3, Nick Winders led off the fifth inning for the Clovers, stole second and went to third on a groundout. Tyce Jackson walked and stole second, with both runners coming home on a double by Brayden Blevins.

Kolton Thorson and Colton Clifford each had RBI singles in the third inning as the Cougars scored three times to take an early lead.

Cloverdale evened the score with three runs of its own in the fourth.

Parker Watts had a double, single and an RBI for the Clovers, while Blevins had two RBI and Tyce Jackson scored two runs.

Jalen Berry had a double and Nick Huff had a double and a single for the Cougars, while Thorson and Clifford each had two singles. Clifford had two RBI.

Softball

Cloverdale 9, North Putnam 1 — The Clovers won their 11th straight game and 13th in their last 14 outings in claiming seventh place in the WIC standings and improving to 15-5.

Macie Couch im- proved her pitching record to 15-4 with the win, striking out 10 Cougars and allowing just five hits. She also hit two doubles.

Morgan Goss had a single, triple and an RBI, while Kiley Shedron had a single, double and two RBI, Sky Lowe had two singles and an RBI, Tori Combs had a single, home run and two RBI, Hannah Long had two singles and Dinah Bunch had a single.

"Offensively, we continue to get multiple hits from numerous players and keep putting up runs in several innings during the game," Clover coach Jim Spencer said.

The Clovers will host West Vigo on Thursday for senior night, as Bunch, Long and Shedron will be honored.

"All three have started for four years and made significant contributions to our program," Spencer said. "More importantly, all three have served has great examples of what Cloverdale softball expects from our players during practice and games to make everyone else better."

Olivia Haste had a double for North Putnam to lead off the second inning, and scored on a Dana Tennis single for the only Cougar run.

Indian Creek 8, South Putnam 3 — At Trafalgar, the host Braves led 3-2 going into the bottom of the fifth inning before breaking out for three runs on their way to claiming fifth place in the WIC standings.

Helen Eaglin had three singles to account for half of the Eagle hits, while Alex Steffy had two RBI and Chloe Custis had a single and scored two runs.

Greencastle 9, Owen Valley 5 — At Spencer, the Tiger Cubs trailed 4-2 after four innings but came on strongly from that point and claimed 11th place in the WIC standings.

Ivy Wright had a two-run single in the first inning to get the Cubs on the board, while Layna Robinson had an RBI single to key a two-run rally in the fifth.

In the sixth inning, Anna Chavez walked and Delaney Wright singled and moved up a base on an error, with Macy Clark following with a single to score them both.

In the seventh, Kenzie Horton and Ivy Wright singled, and both came home on a triple by Delaney Wright.

Ivy Wright had three hits to pace the Cubs, while Robinson and Delaney Wright had two each. Both Wrights and Clark had two RBI.
