Poland Community Lions reviving community sale with Sept. 8 event

Thursday, June 28, 2018

POLAND -- The Poland Community Lions stage an annual event each September called Celebrate Poland to commemorate the history of the eastern Clay County town platted in mid-September 1841.

Last year, a reunion of alumni from Poland School was conducted 50 years after the closing of the school in 1967.

This year, Poland Community Lions will host a revival of the Poland Community Sale, a live auction fundraiser on Saturday Sept. 8, beginning at 10 a.m. at Lions Park. Proceeds will go to Poland Community Lions Club for expansion and maintenance of the park and community service projects.

The original Poland Community Sale was conducted for more than 30 years, ending in the early 1990s.

The sale was a live auction usually in late March and hosted by the Poland Volunteer Fire Department on firehouse grounds. Items up for sale were consigned by community members who could collect all or a portion of the highest bid value or donate the proceeds to the fire department. In most cases, local licensed auctioneers donated their time and received no commission for the sale of the items.

For the revival of the Poland Community Sale, many estate sale items, including furniture, antiques, collectibles, housewares and primitives, have been secured for auction to the highest bidder.

However, the Poland Community Lions need additional auction items from residents in the surrounding community. Persons may call 812-585-1655 or 812-986-2305 to consign a sale item or see us on Facebook at Poland Community Lions Club for more information.

A licensed auctioneer will conduct the auction. Poland Lions members will handle clerking, issuing bid numbers, ring action and cashier transactions. Food will be available and homemade pies and cakes and other dessert items will be offered.

Listings of all sale items to be offered will appear in newspapers, auction websites and social media, two to three weeks before Sept. 8 sale.
