Major damage avoided as tree limb falls on Jackson Street
A Greencastle motorist had a scare put into her Friday morning, but no major damage as a large tree limb fell as she was southbound on Jackson Street.
Karly Bumgardner was southbound at the intersection of Columbia Street shortly after 10 a.m.
As she approached Dave’s Heating and Cooling, she noticed the large tree limb falling into the path of her vehicle.
There was no direct impact and Bumgardner’s vehicle managed to escape with only minor scratches to the top of her vehicle, Greencastle Police Officer Josh Smith reported.
With Bumgardner and her vehicle escaping, the bigger problem became the sizable limb blocking not just local traffic, but most of U.S. 231.
Before Greencastle Public Works personnel even had the chance to arrive, Ron Birt of rural Greencastle took matters into his own hands, hooking a chain up to the limb and pulling it onto Columbia Street with his pickup truck.
Public Works personnel arrived soon thereafter and completed the cleanup process.
On Friday afternoon, workers returned to the area with a bucket truck and took the entire tree down a piece at a time.
