Putnam Adult Literacy Services seeking volunteers

Thursday, August 30, 2018

Do you need help reading or know someone who does? Are you interested in volunteering your time to help someone improve their reading skills?

The Putnam Adult Literary Services (PALS) program at the Putnam County Public Library (PCPL) is seeking adult learners and tutors to join its program.

Adult learners can be anyone interested in improving his or her basic reading or writing in a free, one-on-one session with a trained tutor. Tutors are volunteers who commit to going through eight hours of training and giving at least 45 minutes a week to teach an adult to read.

Tutors and learners arrange their own schedules but meet in the library and have access to research-based materials.

A new tutor training will be offered at the library, 103 E. Poplar St., Greencastle, on Saturday, Sept. 29 from noon to 4 p.m. and followed up on Monday, Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Darco Hawxhurst, a professional tutor-trainer for the Monroe County VITAL program, will be the presenter. Also featured will be speaker Lori Miller from Transformers of Putnam County and a question-and-answer session with experienced tutors in the PALS program.

Anyone, tutor or learner, interested in joining PALS may contact Cheryl Hayes by phone at 653-2755, ext. 107 or by email chayes@PCPL21.org.
