The South Putnam Eagle volleyball team was able to overcome injury issues and put together a win over the Eminence Eels on Thursday night.

The Eagles defeated the Eels in four sets 25-27, 25-19, 25-11 and 25-14. The win improved the Eagles record to 4-7 on the season.

“Yeah, it was good win. We had a lot of girls in rotations they haven’t been in, but they did a good job of stepping up,” South Putnam head coach Rachelle Custis said as the Eagles were missing starters Chloe Custis and Grace Burdge due to injury.

The Eagles got off to a slow start on the night losing the first match, 27-25. The two teams battled back and forth with no team gaining much of an advantage. Brionna Egold kept the Eagles in the first match with several kills.

“We got off to a slow start, but we kept fighting,” Custis said.

The Eagles took the next set 25-19 as they used a 5-0 start to fuel their game. Aubrey Hill picked up several points to lead the Eagles.

The Eagles were able close out the last two matches 25-11 and then 25-14. South used early leads and consistent play from the group to extend its leads in each match.

“With all the roles, we did a good job of playing in new position. Aubrey Hill hasn’t played the back line much this year, but did a good job and got some digs for us,” Custis said.

The Eagles had several rallies spurred by Brianna Robinson’s leadership according to Custis. “Brianna was really talking it up and did a nice job, tonight.”

Egold led the Eagles with 13 kills, while Hill and Marietta McGinnis added five each for South. Egold also had eight digs on the night, while Robinson added seven.

The Eagle win helps them get ready for a tough stretch of games next week.

The Eagles travel to Tri-West on Monday, host county rival Greencastle on Tuesday and finish the week traveling to Western Indiana Conference rival Northview on Thursday.

“We had some girls really step up tonight. This should only help us going forward,” Custis said.

In other volleyball:

Northview 3, Greencastle 0 — The Tiger Cubs lost a tough match to a strong Northview team in Wednesday night’s conference match.

“We had a hard time slowing down Northview’s strong attack from the outside,” GHS coach Maggie Walters said.

Offensively, Jada Amis and Allison Stevens both had five kills for the Cubs and Jalyn Duff had seven assists.

Defensively, Duff led with 13 digs and Lilly Meyer added six.

Greencastle 3, West Vigo 0 — The Tiger Cubs defeated West Vigo in Thursday night’s match, winning by scores of 25-15, 25-16, 25-15 to put the Cubs at 2-1 in conference play.

Allison Stevens had 10 kills and Jalyn Duff added 22 assists led the team’s offense.

Lilly Meyer added seven kills, and Macy Clark had six. Defensively, Jalyn had seven digs, Ivy Wright recorded six digs and Stevens had 3 blocks.

Jada Amis and Clark both added two blocks.

The JV also defeated West Vigo 2-0.

Both teams head to South Putnam Tuesday evening.

Northview 3, North Putnam 0 — The Cougars lost 25-9, 25-19, 25-11 to “a good Northview team,” North coach Bonnie Osborn said. “My girls played hard.”

Osborn was pleased with her team’s effort in the second set.

“Set two was point-for-point most of the game,” she said. “Set three had a rough start that resulted in a slow start for the Cougars.”

Cougars split matches — In a pair of previously unreported matches recently, North Putnam lost 25-21, 25-22 to Greencastle in the Putnam County tournament and beat Crawfordsville 25-17, 25-19, 25-23.

Against Greencastle on Saturday, the Cougars took the eventual champions down to the last few points.

“The Cougars lost a hard-fought match against the Tiger Cubs,” North coach Bonnie Osborn said. “Had we done a couple things better, such as making serves that we missed, I think this game could have ended in the win column for us. I look forward to facing this team again later in the season.”

The Cougars defeated Crawfordsville in straight sets on Tuesday.

“We did a lot of things well,” Osborn said. “Our serving was better and our coverage was better. We continue to grow as a team and I love what I am seeing.”

Osborn sees a few areas in which her young team still needs to improve.

“We have to get quicker,” she said. “Our reaction times are too slow, and we seem to be a second or two behind where we need to be. But, we didn’t give up and played like a team.

“Any time both the JV and varsity teams get wins is a great night.”

South Putnam 3, Crawfordsville 2 — Coach Johnny Briones thought his No. 2 and 3 singles players and No. 1 doubles team “played extremely well, made quick work of their opponents in straight sets to get the team win.”

The Eagles were beaten at No. 2 doubles and No. 1 singles.

“[Trey] Long and [Brandon] Rector struggled a bit, and despite the loss they fought hard to the end,” Briones said. “Thomas Fanning played one of his best opponents of the season. He wasn’t quite on his game, but I was proud of how he never quits.”

Fanning suffered his first loss of the season.

“I know he will bounce back,” Briones said. “We swept all JV matches, very impressed with the efforts of our JV players, seeing daily improvement. We got some good momentum going into Saturday’s conference championship match with Owen Valley, who we just played on Tuesday.”

Golf

Danville 209, Greencastle 224 — Molly Ramey led Greencastle with a 50, but the Tiger Cubs fell to the Warriors.

Bailey Shuee added a 51 for Greencastle, while Serena Patch had a 60, Kadence Shaner had a 63 and Jennifer Scott added a 70.

The match closes out the regular season for the Cubs and will send them to Forest Park in Brazil for the Sectional on Saturday.

“Bailey, Molly and Serena made birdie on the par 4 6th hole by holing out nice putts,” GHS coach Steve Paquin said. “This was the most birdies made in a match this season for GHS.”

Paquin noted that his team has made “significant” improvement in driving and ball striking, but still struggle with chipping and putting.

“This is the area of the game that makes up most of the strokes in their scores,” he said. “They will get better as they get more confidence in their abilities. We will spend the next couple of days practicing for the upcoming sectional and try to advance someone to the regional.”

In other golf:

Tri-West 174, South Putnam 223 — Leighla Hazlett and Alex Steffy each shot a 55 to lead the Eagles.

“As we wind down the season, it is evident that the girls are getting tired,” South coach Cassie Lehmann said. “A few of the players really stepped up their game, but we just couldn’t compete with a team that had every player shooting under 50.”

Kortnee Starks added a 56 for the Eagles, while Kate McCammack had a 57 and Drew Steffy had a 58.
