Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated five recent property-damage accidents.

• At 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Sally A. Reed, 39, Coatesville, was eastbound on County Road 500 North when her 2012 Chrysler Town and Country began to slide.

Reed told Deputy Markus Witt that she tried to brake but the vehicle continued to slide until the vehicle entered the ditch and stopped.

Witt estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500. The vehicle was driven from the scene.

• At 7:50 a.m. on Monday, Christian M. Mason, 35, Fillmore, was southbound on County Road 750 East, just south of County Road 200 North, in a 2004 Buick LeSabre when he lost control due to snow and ice on the road.

Lt. Donnie Pettit reported that the vehicle spun counterclockwise and hit a power pole on the east side of the road.

The car was towed. Pettit estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 5:20 p.m. Pamela K. Payton, 50, Coatesville, was on County Road 500 North, approaching an intersection with a hillcrest at Valley Forge Drive, in a 2007 Pontiac G6.

As she approached the intersection, Payton lost traction and ended up sliding backward, ultimately sliding into a ditch and damaging the rear of her vehicle.

Reserve Deputy Ken Rozelle estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.

• At 12:01 p.m. on Sunday, Thomas Estabrook, 20, Normal, Ill., was westbound on Interstate 70 approaching the 40-mile marker in a 1997 Dodge Ram.

Snow was accumulating at the time and Estabrook lost control and went off the road, hitting a tree.

The vehicle was towed. Sheriff Scott Stockton estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 4:04 p.m. on Thursday, James K. Gibson, 28, Greencastle, was northbound on U.S. 231 at the U.S. 40 intersection in a 2002 Chevrolet Trail Blazer. Anthony L. Austin, 56, Greencastle, was exiting the Marathon station just north of the intersection onto U.S. 231 in a 2006 Mitsubishi Endeavor.

Gibson told Deputy Witt that as he went through the intersection, he saw Austin pulling out of the station parking lot and thought he was going to turn northbound in front of him. He said he slowed a little but then realized that Austin was actually pulling across 231 into a gravel parking lot on the east side of the road.

Gibson turned right to try and avoid Austin’s vehicle but could not. Gibson’s left front corner hit the right front corner of Austin’s and both vehicles went into the gravel lot. As they continued, left rear and right rear of their vehicles also made contact.

Austin told Witt he was crossing 231 in order to help someone stuck in the turn lane on U.S. 40. He said he did not see Gibson’s vehicle approaching as he tried to cross the road.

Neither driver was injured. Both vehicles were driven from the scene.

Witt estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.
