Arvel Bartley Norton

Arvel Bartley Norton, 92, of Roachdale, passed away at Putnam County Hospital, Greencastle, on Sunday, March 31, 2019.

He was born on March 23, 1927 in Mt. Vernon, Ky., to Mitchell and Clearcey (Sowder) Norton.

He married Florence (Surber) Norton on Dec. 31, 1955. She passed away Nov. 29, 1996.

Arvel was a farmer most of his life. He was a member of Roachdale Baptist Church and the Roachdale Masonic Lodge.

He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II.

He enjoyed sports of all kinds; football and basketball were among his favorite. He was an avid IU fan.

He is survived by two children, Steve Norton of Roachdale, and Kathleen (David) Pickel of Whitestown; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sister Winnie Bullock of Mt.Vernon, Ky., and several nieces and nephews.

Arvel was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, William Robert Norton, Shelby Franklin Norton, and three sisters, Mary Agnes Bullock, Lois Jane Witt and Susie Blanton.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 3 at Servies and Morgan, 102 E. Washington St., Roachdale. Pastor Shannon Ivers will be officiating the service.

Burial will follow the service at Brick Chapel Cemetery.

Friends may visit with the family from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 2 at the funeral home. A masonic service will be held at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
