A Greencastle man is in the Putnam County Jail, facing an attempted murder charge as well as two other felonies after a Sunday afternoon incident.

Ryan P. Payne, 27, Greencastle, was booked in at 4:34 p.m., facing preliminary charges of Level 1 felony attempted murder, Level 6 felony intimidation and Level 6 felony criminal recklessness.

Authorities were first called to the 5500 East block of County Road 300 South for what was described as a domestic situation that “went bad real fast.”

Multiple people were involved in the altercation that culminated with Payne allegedly firing a shot at another person. Fortunately, the shot only grazed the victim’s head, not penetrating his skull.

A second person sustained a minor injury during and ensuing scuffle to disarm Payne.

The others were able to successfully disarm Payne, who was taken into custody upon the arrival of officers.

The case has been turned over to the Putnam County Prosecutor’s Office for a decision on formal charges.

Payne has no prior criminal record in the state aside from a pair of alcohol-related offenses as a minor.
