Senior Education Ministries will present another monthly installment of Dine with a Doc on Monday, Aug. 26 from 10 a.m to noon at the Putnam County Hospital.

Dine with a Doc is a free community-based program that welcomes the local senior public to hear an educational topic while enjoying a complimentary lunch.

Sherry Dowell, a licensed practical nurse (LPN), will speak during this month’s event.

Dowell attended Ivy Tech Community College in Terre Haute and received her LPN license. She also attended IUPUI in Indianapolis to obtain her bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Dowell has completed extensive studies at numerous teaching sites for understanding Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in children and adults, and has completed online studies for telemetry cardiac monitoring.

Dowell has worked at Clay County Hospital (before it became St. Vincent Clay Hospital), and is versed in a variety of areas including med-surg, adult ICU, OB/GYN, respite care and emergency department and ambulance transfers.

She also worked at Riley Children’s Hospital in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and as a cardiac telemetry tech and nurse. Dowell worked both units concurrently for 31 years, retiring in December 2017. She has volunteered as a camp nurse teaching campers and assisting doctors and medical/pharmacy students.

Dowell’s nursing and volunteer career, as well as her life experience raising children and pets, was a driving force in her desire to help others. She enjoys natural medicine, and has a strong knowledge base in essential oils and how they can be used to help address allergies.

A question-answer period will follow Dowell’s discussion.

The complimentary lunch will be provided courtesy of Putnam County Hospital.

The hospital provides ongoing support and educational classes to meet the needs of the community, and is pleased to be partnering with Senior Education Ministries to serve the seniors in Putnam County through the Dine with a Doc program.

There will be various health care providers present to share information about their services and to give out door prizes for participants to win.

Hickory Creek at Sunset will also offer a complimentary wellness clinic, which will include blood pressure screening.

The Dine with a Doc program was designed for seniors to connect with their peers, to educate with the goal of improving quality of life and to provide resources and information to make informed health care choices.
