Residents displaced after Monday evening fire at Mill Pond

No serious injuries have been reported after a fire at Mill Pond Health Campus prompted the response of emergency personnel Monday evening.

According to its log, the Greencastle Fire Department dispatched two engines at 7:35 p.m. to the senior living facility located at 1014 Mill Pond Ln. referencing a commercial structure fire.

When GFD arrived on the scene at 7:38, they found a fire confined to one room where a sprinkler system had been activated. The flames were controlled before they arrived, with firefighters dousing the rest of the fire with an extinguisher.

Operation Life was also called to the scene and transported four patients - two residents and two employees - to Putnam County Hospital for further evaluation.

GFD also reported that police personnel responded to the incident, though it was not specified which departments they represented.

In a Tuesday afternoon call from the Banner Graphic, GFD reported as being the last to leave the scene at 9:02 p.m.

It was believed by GFD that a light above a bed in the room had caught fire, then in turn ignited a pillow and the bedspread on the bed.

Damage caused by the fire itself was found to be minimal. However, the room suffered what was described by GFD in a follow-up on its Facebook page Monday evening as “extensive water damage.”

GFD also provided that 22 residents were displaced from the wing where the fire originated. However, a full evacuation of the building did not take place.

GFD estimated financial damages at $4,000-$5,000, though this was not a set determination.

Mill Pond’s executive director Rachel Frye did not return calls for comment from the Banner Graphic Tuesday afternoon.
