Election results will be available even with no gathering at courthouse

The familiar sight of a League of Women Voters volunteer posting results on Election Night will not take place on Tuesday. All the same, results will be published online at www.bannergraphic.com.

A local Election Day tradition is on hold.

Having closely followed the COVID-19 situation closely, the Putnam County Election Board and Putnam County Commissioners recently made the decision not to have the courthouse open on Tuesday evening for citizens to watch as results are posted on the second-floor whiteboard.

Despite making this tough decision, though, county officials will still be hard at work Tuesday, as three polling places will be open while teams of election workers at the courthouse tabulate an unprecedented number of absentee ballots that have arrived by mail.

And at the end of it all, there will still be winners and losers in four different county-level Republican primary races: Putnam County Auditor, Putnam County Coroner, Putnam County Commissioner District 3 and Putnam County Council At-Large.

The Banner Graphic staff will work to ensure that reults are available as soon as possible at www.bannergraphic.com, though County Clerk Heather Gilbert said she is unsure when results will be available due to absentee tabulation.

Additionally, complete results and stories on the contested races will be available online and in the Friday, June 5 print edition of the Banner Graphic.

Contested races in the Republican primary include:

• Auditor: Kristina (Warren) Alexander, Tina Sillery

• Coroner: Ryan Birkemeier, Andrea Moore, Jon Myers

• Commissioner District 3: Tom Burnett, Tom Helmer, Shawn D. McCammack Sr., Ernie Sheldon, Donald K. Walton, Greg Williams

• County Council At-large (vote for 3): Stephanie (Summitt) Campbell, Bil Earl, Phil Gick, Bill Mentgen, Larry L. Parker, Ronald Spencer II

There are no contested races on the Democratic ballot.

Government has no business running primary elections.

Shame on both parties and all the candidates who are unwilling to recognize this simple truth.
