Man saved through Deputy Helmer’s quick actions
BAINBRIDGE — Already the recipient of a life-saver award following an incident last July, Deputy Brian Helmer’s quick actions likely saved another life on Sunday.
Patrolling in northern Putnam County, Helmer was dispatched to a cardiac arrest, along with Putnam County EMS.
Helmer was able to locate the address first and exited his patrol vehicle with his department-issued automatic external defibrillator.
Once inside the home, Helmer was escorted to the victim. He assessed the victim and found that he was neither breathing nor had a readable pulse.
Helmer deployed his AED wihtin two minutes and was able to deliver a shock to the victim.
Paramedics arrived shortly thereafter and administered several more shocks using Helmer’s AED, resuscitating the man.
Shift supervisor Sgt. Anthony Brown has submitted a request that Helmer again be honored for his actions.
“Due to Deputy Helmer acting quickly and being properly trained with his AED, I respectfully request that Deputy Helmer be put in for a life-saving award,” Brown wrote.
Brown further reported that as of Sunday evening, the man was believed to still be alive.
