The office of District 4 U.S. Congressman Jim Baird (R-Greencastle) is hosting a virtual service academy information day.

A member of Rep. Baird’s staff will be answering questions about the academies and the congressional nomination process for students in grades 8-12.

“Attending an academy is a unique and rewarding experience for students to continue their education while building a foundation for an exciting and challenging career,” Rep. Baird said. “It is my honor to assist and nominate Indiana’s best and brightest on their paths to becoming the next generation of America’s leaders.”

A congressional nomination is required for students wishing to enter the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.; the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md.; the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y.

Successful applicants will have a broad academic background, the ability to pass a physical aptitude test, and strong leadership potential. An applicant must also be a U.S. citizen, a high school graduate between the ages of 17 and 23, unmarried, have no dependents, and be of high moral character.

Acceptance of a service academy appointment requires at least a nine-year service obligation, including four years at an academy and five years of active duty service.

The event will be held virtually via Zoom on Saturday, Aug. 8 from 10-11 a.m. EST.

Eligible applicants interested in attendance should RSVP to Matt Row, no later than Wednesday, July 29 to obtain the login information. He can be reached at matt.row@mail.house.gov or 317-563-5567.
