Trent Scott introduced as Banner sports editor
A familiar face is returning to Putnam County to serve as the sports editor of the Banner Graphic.
Trent Scott will be the new sports editor, taking over for Joey Bennett, who departs Greencastle to serve as the editor for sister paper The Brazil Times.
A 2005 graduate of South Putnam High School, Scott returns to Putnam County after five years as sports editor of the Peru Tribune in northern Indiana. Prior to that, he served as a stringer covering a variety of sports for the Banner Graphic.
“We are excited to welcome Trent into the fold as a member of the Banner Graphic team,” Editor Jared Jernagan said. “He did a good job for us in six years as a freelance stringer, covering a variety of sports for four different BG sports editors, including myself. Add his five years of experience in Peru and I am confident Putnam County readers will be happy with his work.”
Following graduation, Scott studied at Manchester College — now Manchester University — where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in communication in 2009 and competed for the Spartan track and field team.
Bennett departs the Banner Graphic after four and a half years, stepping into the Clay County community where he formerly served as an educator at Northview High school.
Banner Graphic General Manager Daryl Taylor expressed his gratitude for Bennett’s work.
“I can’t thank Joey enough for the work he’s done here in Greencastle,” Taylor said. “I hate to see him go but wish him nothing but the best at our sister paper in Brazil.
“We are glad to bring Trent, a Putnam County native, on as our sports editor,” Taylor added. “His local knowledge and experience in Peru should be an asset to our publication.”
Jernagan echoed these sentiments.
“I’m thrilled to welcome Trent back to town, though I think he’ll find replacing Joey to be a bit of a double-edged sword,” Jernagan said. “On the one hand, we are asking him to fill some very big shoes. On the other, I believe our sports department is in a very good place right now and he will benefit from the excellent reputation Joey has already built.”
