Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated four recent property-damage crashes.

• At 8:18 p.m. on Sunday, Joseph D. Thornton, 20, Martinsville, was eastbound on State Road 42 in a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta when he hit a deer.

Deputy Robert Soilleux estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 9:12 a.m. on Saturday, Devin R. Maurer, 40, Brazil, was eastbound on U.S. 40 near County Road 800 West in a 2010 Ford F-150 when he hit a deer.

Reserve Deputy Ken Rozelle estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, Michael E. Hall, 51, Greencastle, was westbound on U.S. 36 in a 2008 Ford F-150 when he swerved to miss a deer.

This resulted in the car leaving the south side of the road, striking and sheering off a utility pole near the bottom. The pickup then became lodged on the lower portion of the broken power pole.

The impact left the top part of the pole dangling over the vehicle still attached to the lines.

Deputy Soilleux reported that upon his arrival, Hall was lying in the ditch about 20 feet east of the crash site. He told Soilleux he exited the vehicle fearing the lines and pole would fall on him.

The deputy noted that Hall smelled of alcoholic beverage and admitted to drinking alcohol. He tested at .12 percent on the portable breath test and was charged with driving under the influence.

Hall complained of pain all over and was transported to a trauma center for treatment.

The truck was towed. Soilleux estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 2, Jack R. Rhoden, 29, Cloverdale, was northbound on Meridian Line Road in a 2003 Dodge Ram. Jeremy L. King, 38, Cloverdale, was turning onto the road from a private drive in a 2007 Hyundai Accent.

Rhoden told Deputy Kyle Lee that King turned out of the private drive and directly into his path of travel. He tried to avoid the vehicle, but ultimately struck the rear bumper of the car.

King gave a similar account but told Lee that he believed Rhoden’s speed was a factor.

Lee also noted that the drive is partially hidden, as it is located in a curve.

Damage was estimated at $1,000-$2,500.
