Police: Eight dead in shooting at FedEx facility in Indianapolis

Friday, April 16, 2021

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A gunman killed eight people and wounded several others before killing himself in a late-night shooting at a FedEx facility near the Indianapolis airport, police said, in the latest in a spate of mass shootings after a relative lull during the pandemic.

Five people were hospitalized after the Thursday night shooting, according to police. One of them had critical injuries, police spokesperson Genae Cook said. Another two people were treated and released at the scene. FedEx said people who worked for the company were among the dead.

A witness said that he was working inside the building when he heard several gunshots in rapid succession.

“I see a man come out with a rifle in his hand and he starts firing and he starts yellin’ stuff that I could not understand,” Levi Miller told WTHR-TV. “What I ended up doing was ducking down to make sure he did not see me because I thought he would see me and he would shoot me.”

Police have not identified the shooter or said whether he was an employee at the facility.

“We’re still trying to ascertain the exact reason and cause for this incident,” Cook said.

Craig McCartt, of the Indianapolis police, told NBC Today early Friday that officers still knew “very little.”

It was the latest in a recent string of mass shootings across the U.S. Last month, eight people were fatally shot at massage businesses across the Atlanta area, and 10 died in gunfire at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado.

It was at least the third mass shooting this year in Indianapolis alone. Five people, including a pregnant woman, were shot and killed in January, and a man was accused of killing three adults and a child before abducting his daughter during at argument at a home in March.

Family members gathered at a nearby hotel to await word on loved ones — and some employees were bused there for tearful reunions. But other relatives said they still had no information about their loved ones hours later. Most employees aren’t allowed to carry cellphones inside the FedEx building, making contact with them difficult.

“When you see notifications on your phone, but you’re not getting a text back from your kid and you’re not getting information and you still don’t know where they are … what are you supposed to do?” said Mindy Carson, holding back tears. Her daughter, Jessica, works in the facility and she had not heard from her.

Police were called to reports of gunfire Thursday just after 11 p.m., and officers “came in contact with (an) active shooter incident,” Cook said. The gunman later killed himself.

“The officers responded, they came in and did their job. A lot of them are trying to face this, because this is a sight that no one should have to see,” Cook said.

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett lamented that the city was “confronted with the horrific news of yet another mass shooting, an act of violence that senselessly claimed the lives of eight of our neighbors.”

FedEx released a statement saying saying it is cooperating with authorities.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of our team members following the tragic shooting at our FedEx Ground facility in Indianapolis," the statement said. "Our most heartfelt sympathies are with all those affected by this senseless act of violence.”

A man told WTTV that his niece was sitting in the driver's seat of her car when the gunfire erupted, and she was wounded.

“She got shot on her left arm,” said Parminder Singh. “She's fine, she's in the hospital now.”

He said his niece did not know the shooter.

  • America is facing a HUGE mental health problem. More resources for mental health need to be made available. A person suffering shouldn't have to go untreated simply because they can't afford it, or it's only offered during times that can't accommodate them. This is getting out of control. And if I hear one person say there needs to be more gun control... well... tell me, how's that working out with the current laws in place? A person who is suffering with mental health issues (along with criminals) don't care about laws. If they want to kill, they will find a way.

  • NOT letting just anyone buy a gun might be a start on that "mental health problem".

  • Other countries dont have mental health issues?

"A person who is suffering with mental health issues (along with criminals) don't care about laws." ---- is that universal or just in the US? Other countries dont seem to have this plague of mass shootings on weekly basis.

  • That isn't a true narrative. I am not a defender of guns but the above statement is not a true statement either.

  • Whats not true?

Both issues (mental health and gun control) need addressed. It's not a singular issue and it won't be a singular fix.

However to say that gun control doesn't need major major attention and fixes is naïve at best. Tell me that the outcome wouldn't have been different if this person (mental health aside) would have had a musket instead of a high powered semi-automatic / automatic gun.

The laws are antiquated based off of weapons / technology that didn't exist when they were written and need updated to reflect the current times. Laws get updated every day in this country and the gun laws need to be addressed accordingly.

  • You notice how many mass shootings have happened since the end of January compared to the last four years? Also the eight years before then? Seems like one group keeps us hating each other.

  • bluewolf -according to statistica.com, from 1983 until 2020, the 3 years with the most U.S. mass shootings were 2017, 2018 and 2019.

  • I like to think that most people do not drive drunk but I could be wrong. I know for a fact that most people who owns guns do not use them in this way, and we do not have any legitimate way to prevent an undiagnosed person from gun ownership.

But, 19!! This is troubling. Why are we not focusing on the breakdown of the family? We've heard from his mom, but what about his dad? Kids are not meant to be raised by 1 parent.

  • Volenteerff you fail to mention that in 2020 the mass shootings were way down all the way to only two of that year with a total of 9 killed and zero injured. So why the sudden spike? Naturally with higher population you will have more crime.

Bluewolf - there were 611 mass shootings in 2020 with over 500 killed so I'm not sure how you're coming up with only two.

  • One in Springfield Missouri march16. One in Milwaukee Wisconsin.February 26. Since 1982 there has been 123 mass shootings that fit the formal definition.

  • “ Naturally with higher population you will have more crime.” Are you trying to link immigration with mass shootings? If not, I struggle to find how this statement is germane to the discussion.

Bluewolf - there is no "formal" definition of a mass shooting but the FBI considers 3 or more people shot as a mass shooting and the United Congress Research Service defines it as 4 or more people so I'd love to hear this "formal" definition that allows your spin of 2 shootings last year and only 123 since 82.

  • This has turned into a sadly amazing conversation.

  • A mentally disturbed person with an obvious grudge against a former employer is not a good combination. However, does FedEx not have any type of security outside the facility? Apparently you can just drive in, park and get out of your vehicle without being checked.

  • The media reported that it was a gun-free zone. No guns were supposed to be carried by anyone, even criminals and the mentally disturbed.
