Plans are moving forward for the stained glass skylight in the atrium of the Carnegie entrance at the Putnam County Public Library to get much-needed repairs.

The PCPL Board of Trustees approved a recommendation by Director Matt McClelland to accept a quote for restoring the skylight’s panels during its virtual meeting Wednesday evening.

The scope of the $7,165 quote will include fully restoring the nine glass panels in the skylight. The glass will be removed, fixed and then placed back into the original wooden frames.

Camden stated in its quote to the library that scaffolding would be erected to gin access through two trap doors in the fixture itself. The entire frames will be removed and then transported to Camden’s studio in Indianapolis.

Each panel will be de-glazed from the frame and graphic rubbings will be made in order to cut replacement pieces when necessary. Camden recommended updating each panel border with zinc came. The panels would finally be reinstalled using silicone glazing.

McClelland said at the meeting that the Friends of the Library were organizing fundraising for the restoration. He also noted that it could be a “good use” of the library’s gift fund. A fundraiser for the project will take place at Myers’ Market next Thursday, May 6.

McClelland provided that the restoration would be complete by the anniversary of the opening of the library’s modern addition. The addition was completed in 1996.

• McClelland and the board discussed how it would move forward with resuming in-person meetings. McClelland noted House Enrolled Bill 1437, recently signed by Gov. Eric Holcomb, and how it applies to libraries.

According to guidance shared from the Indiana State Library, at least half of the library board must be in person at each meeting. For the PCPL’s board, that means four must attend to make a quorum.

The guidance dictates that library board must adopt a policy establishing procedures regarding remote participation. These procedures may more restrictive, but not less than, what is required.

At the meeting, the board agreed that in-person meetings could resume next month. As such, McClelland said a policy would be drawn up and presented to the board, with its final approval being in June.

The entire board joined McClelland and Treasurer Lisa Barker for the meeting.

The next regular meeting of the Library Board is scheduled for Wednesday, April 28 at 6 p.m. in the Kiwanis Room at the library.
