James Harvey ‘Cy’ Young

Monday, May 24, 2021

James Harvey Young, 73, known as Cy to his Greencastle friends, died on Thursday, May 20, 2021 in Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

Cy was born May 30, 1947 to Dorothy Hood and Cyrus Clifton Young in Princeton, N.J. He lived there until the end of his freshman year in high school, but his love for the town continued throughout his life. He regularly read the local Princeton paper and would pass on things he had read to family.

He had a way of making friends and helping people feel at ease that served him well as he attended three different high schools because of family moves.

Cy graduated from DePauw University, receiving a B.A. in 1971 and an M.A. in 1972. He then taught mathematics in the Putnam County public schools. His activities in the teachers union sparked an interest in the law and he received a J.D. from Indiana University in 1978.

After admission to the Bar, he went into practice with the firm of Lyon and Boyd. After the deaths of the senior members of the firm, Cy continued a solo law practice in Greencastle until his death.

Cy found Greencastle to be a friendly community and loved to call it home. He spent his life serving people in the community and made many lasting friendships among a wide collection of Greencastle’s citizens. His sense of humor entertained his friends and relatives.

Cy is survived by a brother, Frank (Julie), and a sister, Janice Domanik (Richard), and many nieces and nephews.

His parents and his brother Clifton predeceased him.

A celebration of his life in the manner of Friends (Quakers) will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 5 at the Unitarian-Universalist Congregation, 1875 S. Fruitridge Ave., Terre Haute, IN 47803. Please wear masks to protect the health of all who attend.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Friends Service Committee, 1501 Cherry St., Philadelphia, PA 19102 or to DePauw University, 204 E. Seminary, Greencastle, Indiana 46135-0037.
