Vera L. Whitley

Vera I. (Meek) Whitley, age 93, of Parkville, Mo., went to be with our Lord on Friday, July 16, 2021.

She was born in Jordan Village, Owen County, on Sept. 18, 1927 to Cecil Z. and Alta C. (Trout) Meek.

Vera worked for several years as head cashier for Standard Grocery before her husband was transferred to Kansas City, Kan., and continued to cashier for a grocery store. They lived for many years in Des Moines, Iowa, where she worked in the custom drapery department at Sears. She was an excellent seamstress and loved making tailor made clothing and draperies for her family.

Vera love to do arts and crafts and enjoyed working in her yard and flower garden. She was amazing at packing and could fit a mountain of clothing into a closet or suitcase. She loved to shop with her friends and family but her true joy was riding the motorcycle with her husband Bill. She was a tiny lady and had her own motorcycle, too.

She had a love for animals and they loved her back. She loved to walk the dog or just take walks with her grandson. She was always ready to give a helping hand to anyone needing it.

Vera was a women of deep faith and read her Bible daily and collected many Bibles and study books. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran.

She was a devoted grandma to her grandchild and thoroughly enjoyed visiting with her many great grandchildren and gave this family many beautiful memories to cherish. Her precious smile and twinkle in her eye will be greatly missed.

Vera married Jay M. Godfrey and they had one son. She later married William E Whitley.

She is survived by son, Jerry M. (Sherry) Godfrey; grandson Alan J. (Joyce) Godfrey; brothers Larry F. Meek and William G. Meek Sr. She also has many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great-grandchildren.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bill; two brothers, Harold L Meek and Richard D. Meek, and sister Thelma Roberta (Meek) Williams.

Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, July 22 at Bainbridge Cemetery.
