Putnam among 15 counties approaching high risk for virus

Thursday, July 29, 2021

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The number of Indiana counties approaching high risk for community spread of COVID-19 nearly quadrupled in one week as an especially contagious coronavirus variant spread throughout the state.

Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb cited Indiana’s increased levels of COVID-19 infections as he issued an extension Thursday of the statewide public health emergency until Aug. 30. A new executive order from Holcomb, however, does not reimpose any statewide face mask requirements or crowd-size limits that expired in April.

As of Monday, 15 counties — including Putnam — were in Indiana’s second-riskiest category for the spread of the disease, according to an update posted Wednesday on the state’s coronavirus dashboard. Four counties were in that orange category one week earlier.

Indiana’s color-coded coronavirus risk map shows blue, yellow, orange and red levels that measure weekly COVID-19 cases per 100,000 county residents and the 7-day positivity rate. No Indiana counties are in the highest-risk red category, which indicates very high community spread.

The state’s new coronavirus cases and hospitalizations for COVID-19 rebounded this month to levels last seen in May, as the delta variant, which spreads more easily than previous versions of the coronavirus, continues spreading throughout the country, particularly in places with low vaccination rates, such as Indiana.

Tests conducted this month on a sample of Indiana’s cases showed that as of Thursday, nearly 92 percent of them were the delta variant, the dashboard showed.

Holcomb said this week that he’s concerned about the variant’s spread at a time when just 50% of Indiana’s eligible population — those age 12 and up — is fully vaccinated and the weekly numbers of Hoosiers getting vaccinated continues to decline after peaking in April.

“If this isn’t persuasive to get vaccinated, I don’t know what could be,” he said Tuesday. “This is not hard to understand. Vaccines work. Look at the numbers. Look at the cases. Look at the hospitalization rates. Look at the deaths. It’s overwhelmingly the unvaccinated.”

Only 44 percent of Indiana’s full population, including children younger than 12 who aren’t eligible, is fully vaccinated against the virus. That lags behind the national average of 49.4 percent and far behind the state with the highest vaccination rate, Vermont, where more than two-thirds of the population — 67.4 percent — is inoculated.

Holcomb said Tuesday that he still won’t implement any new statewide restrictions and will leave such decisions to local officials. The state’s health commissioner, Dr. Kristina Box, is scheduled to provide an update Friday on the state’s response to the pandemic.

  • Why weren't the names of all 15 Counties listed in this article, I have relatives living all over the state , I'd like to know if they are in danger , or if I might be if I decide to visit.

  • Watching Fox59 this morning and they were showing Putnam County in the "Red" category , as well as a few others.

  • Now if we can just get some more snowflakes to set aside their “internet research” and roll up their sleeves for the vaccination…

Hopefully that’s not too tall an order to ask. But I’m afraid it probably is.

  • @Koios--then you must be the "vaccination nazi" of Putnam county.

  • Nice overreach, Don. Kudos.

Don - NAZI would not be proper.

NAZI's were actual party members and true believers.

The "Good German" was the neighbor, the co-worker, the friend that would turn people over to the NAZI party.

The "Good German" was just following orders - out of fear, and reverence of the state(government).

There were lots of "Good Germans".

  • Wow, the drama here echoes that of Shakespeare’s greatest works. Much Ado About Nothing, anyone? Keep on your “internet research”. The rest of us will just have to exercise patience, I suppose.

  • CDC this week just decided that they will no longer use the PRC test for covid.

Seems can't tell the difference between covid and seasonal flu.

    Huh...

Maybe that explains the record low number of flu cases in 2020.

  • oops

    PCR test

    not PRC

honest mistake, I was thinking Peoples Republic of China

-- Posted by direstraits on Sat, Jul 31, 2021, at 5:09 PM
  • Dire, with all due respect I ask, can you read? No where in that notice does it say that the RT-PCR test cannot differentiate between Covid and Flu viruses. It does ask that clinical labs choose a replacement that can, like the RT-PCR test. In scientific fact, RT-PCR is a very specific test that readily differentiates between the 2 viruses. It looks for and detects mRNA that is found only in the coronavirus that causes Covid-19.

  • Bottom line its a flawed test. Its being pulled.

Stop and think about all of the decisions and policy that have been based on arguably flawed and illogical data of the number of covid cases.

Just like this press release exemplifies, its time to panic again, the county color going to turn red!

What are they basing it on?

    Case counts...from a test that's being dismissed.

oh yeah, its not being pulled until 12-31-21

-- Posted by direstraits on Sat, Jul 31, 2021, at 8:17 PM
  • It’s not a flawed test. Again, read the document they posted without your preconceived biases. They are trying to get clinical labs to use tests that can, with one sample, test for both the flu and the corona virus. The coronavirus RT-PCR test can very accurately confirm the presence or absence of the coronavirus, but doesn’t simultaneously test for presence or absence of the flu virus. This is what they are trying to change come winter. Use logic and critical thinking while reading, not the crutch of conspiracy theories, or outright lies being fed to you. Coronavirus is not the flu. It’s an entirely different virus. Despite what you were told.

  • if you all my neighbors and maybe friends think this is going to end well for us you are sadly mistaken. The same government that has conducted the tuskcogee experiments and has radiated it's citizens, has dropped drugs in the water supply and has overthrown the democratically elected governments the world over is your friend, you are badly mistaken. Trust not the media or the government. they are two sides of the same coin.

  • DAVID_NORRIS, your warnings mean nothing to the gullible crowd that frequents this site, but what you speak is absolutely true. One only needs to read about the DOWNWINDERS of Utah or of the testing on (so-called) volunteers in DUGWAY, Utah, to gain a certain amount of skepticism concerning the government. It affected me personally.

  • Well, we were talking about the RT-PCR test for coronavirus. Then, evidently, we were no longer, taking a slight diversion on things that mostly happened in the 1940’s-1960’s. Not sure how that train jumped the rails, perhaps it ran into a tinfoil hat?

-- Posted by Koios on Mon, Aug 2, 2021, at 5:59 PM
  • This all cracks me up. Koios had good advice- ALLLLLLLLL sides of the aisle need to use critical and logical thinking. Sadly............. oh well, I can ponder the concept.

-- Posted by beg on Mon, Aug 2, 2021, at 6:49 PM
  • Thanks beg, we don’t usually agree, but thanks for recognizing what I feel is a big problem currently. You are right, both sides. Once McDonalds dining room opens I’ll buy you a cheeseburger, lol.

-- Posted by Koios on Mon, Aug 2, 2021, at 7:49 PM
  • When the National media joined the Government propaganda group they lost the critical thinkers on the vaccine. The CDC mouth piece flip flops more than a fish out of water with his political agenda. @beg

    -- Posted by 1armyvet on Mon, Aug 2, 2021, at 8:07 PM
  • Please define “national media”, with examples, if you will. I’m curious to know how you define that.

-- Posted by Koios on Mon, Aug 2, 2021, at 8:16 PM
  • BEG, "All sides of the aisle need to use critical and logical thinking." What makes everyone think both sides are not using critical and logical thinking? In my family, I'm the skeptic and I got the vaccination. My wife, the scientist, elected not to.

I think it is the lack of critical and logical thinking that believes anyone who is a skeptic concerning the epidemic is anti-vaccination.

How did the train jump the track? It wasn't a tinfoil hat. It was being walked down into a basement laboratory of a ramshackle government shack and have someone you don't know pull out two giant syringes of your blood while ignoring your very young repeated requests as to why. Some memories don't go away.

-- Posted by Prince of Stardust Hills on Mon, Aug 2, 2021, at 8:28 PM
  • “What makes everyone think both sides are not using critical and logical thinking?”

    Rigged election?

    Defund the police?

Those that claim to back the police, then attack the Capital Police?

Those that want social justice, but destroy Portland?

    That’s a start.

Plus trying to link the flu to the coronavirus, which is where this all started above.

  • Koios,

I think you put a bow on this one!!!!!! Excellent in bringing uncommon sense and logic. Makes it difficult for others to continue.

    Kudos to Koios

-- Posted by beg on Tue, Aug 3, 2021, at 11:11 PM
  • I think he missed the point entirely. So much for critical and logical thinking.

  • One question-are they vaccinating the people coming across the southern boarder or just busing them across the USA?

-- Posted by your mom on Wed, Aug 4, 2021, at 12:19 PM
  • i want to carry a sign about the square that says "the end is nigh" but, things are slow mo these days. our (both sides) politicians are liars these days. "15 days to slow the spread" a virus that is 99.85% survivable. "further lockdowns may be needed" ADE is not mentioned. A vaccine that does not protect is pushed as the end all be all. God save us all.

If I don't get the shot, I might die.

If I get the shot, I might die.

If I get the shot, I don't know what it is going to do to my body.

If I don't get the shot, I have done nothing new to my body.

    I don't get the shot.

Now the vaccinated wants to force me to get the shot. (Yes, social pressure is force.) I refuse.

The vaccinated says I must do it for the sake of the group.

But the vaccinated shouldn't fear the unvaccinated, right?

    After all, they are protected.

Unless they aren't. And the fear sets in.

    Misery loves company.
