Capt. Chris Jones took Akers into custody after the suspect allegedly skip-scanned a baby monitor, valued at $109, at the U-scan station.

Akers reportedly wrapped the monitor in two towels he was purchasing and did not scan the monitor at the pay station.

Akers was lodged in the Putnam County Jail for theft and carrying a handgun without a permit.

Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated four recent property-damage crashes.

• At 10:55 p.m. on Wednesday, Laura M. Swearingen, 47, Carbon, was northbound on County Road 275 East in a 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander when she hit a deer.

Deputy Robert Soilleux estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 7:48 p.m. on Wednesday, Andrea E. Sununu, 74, Greencastle, was exiting the parking lot of Dollar General and onto Indianapolis Road in a 2017 Toyota Corolla. Kayla R. Popplewell, 27, Franklin, was eastbound on Indianapolis Road in a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Popplewell told Deputy Derek Line she saw Sununu’s car leaving the parking lot and that she did not appear to be slowing down or yielding to traffic. Popplewell said she tried to swerve, but could not avoid the collision, with Sununu’s front bumper hitting her right rear wheel area.

Sununu told the deputy she was leaving the parking lot when all of a sudden her car hit the other vehicle. She was unable to recall how the accident happened.

A witness said it appeared that Sununu did not see Popplewell’s vehicle, but then attempted to stop but pressed the accelerator by accident. Popplewell agreed with this statement.

Police called Putnam County EMS to the scene to check out an infant who was restrained in a car seat in the back seat of Popplewell’s vehicle. A male passenger also complained of an injury and was scene by medic. Both the baby and the man were released at the scene.

Sununu’s vehicle was towed. Line estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 9:21 a.m. on Monday, Abdi M. Naasir, 37, Schuyler, Neb., was westbound on State Road 240 in a 2019 Volvo VNL registered to Magic Moves, Cincinnati.

Naasir told Deputy Tanner Brown another vehicle was passing and he got over as close to the side of the road as possible, but the passenger side tires went into the ditch, pulling the entire truck into the ditch.

The truck was towed. Brown estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 5 a.m. on Monday, Mary Crisp, 32, Fillmore, was northbound on County Road 725 East in a 2020 Dodge Charger when she hit a deer.

Deputy Brown estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.
