When Sheriff Scott Stockton’s powers of purr-suasion didn’t work Thursday afternoon, he had to call in backup.

This time, it wasn’t from any of his deputies, but from the Greencastle Fire Department, as a cat had barricaded itself into a car’s engine compartment, refusing to come out.

The kitten in question had hopped a ride to Monical’s via the Putnam Plaza eatery’s delivery vehicle.

The cat then went from that car to an employee’s vehicle, where it crawled into the engine compartment.

“The cat was obviously trying to get pizza,” Stockton said.

The sheriff happened upon the scene, but when he was unsuccessful in getting the kitten to emerge, he called GFD.

Using “high tech” extraction equipment from the sheriff, the firefighting crew was able to get the kitten to emerge, though not without some scratches on their hands.

Stockton joked that charges could be considered for the feline.

“He didn’t actually steal the car and I don’t know if charges will be pending,” Stockton said. “It’s obviously conversion because he didn’t have the owner’s permission.

“Obviously it was resisting, but I didn’t have any handcuffs.”

Instead, the cat was taken into custody and placed in a detention box.

However, the story has a happy ending as a Monical’s employee volunteered to adopt the cat, naming him Tiger.

She’d better keep ahold of that Tiger ... by the tail.

Having just rescued a feline from an engine compartent, Greencastle firefighters (from left) Jason Simonson, Darrick Wiatt, Jake Armstrong and Peter Moorton stand with the kitten, Tiger.
