Work continues on U.S. 36 added travel lanes project in Avon

AVON – Updates to the U.S. 36 Added Travel Lanes Project in Avon have been announced by the Indiana Department of Transportation.

Due to issues with utility companies not relocating equipment in a timely manner, U.S. 36 is now expected to reopen to the traveling public after the end of December 2022.

The contractor has a plan to make that happen, weather permitting and barring any supply chain issues, INDOT said. That includes additional labor to blanket the concrete, additional ground heating equipment and the use of winter-mix concrete.

If the road reopens at the end of this year, as expected, crews will mainly be focusing on improvements off the roadway in the spring. That includes making sure ditches are sloped correctly, along with landscaping improvements. This work will only require temporary restrictions, if any.

There will also be minor surface work and lane striping needed in spring of 2023.

The project spans from Shiloh Park Drive to just east of Raceway Road. Two lanes will remain open for both directions of travel on U.S. 36.

White Construction Inc. was awarded the $8.6 million contract. The primary purpose of the project is to reduce delays and improve the safety on U.S. 36 with a focus on the heavily congested portion between the Ronald Reagan Parkway and Raceway Road.

INDOT reminds motorists to slow down, use caution and consider worker safety when traveling through a work zone.
