South Putnam rolls past Edgewood

Friday, September 16, 2022

The South Putnam Eagles racked up 423 yards of offense, while holding the Edgewood Mustangs to just 85 yards, cruising to a 60-7 homecoming victory at Wildman Field Friday night.

The Eagles wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Wyatt Mullin tossed a beautiful pass down the sideline to Zach Dorsett for a 49-yard scoring strike just a little over a minute into the game. The extra point was missed to make it 6-0.

South’s defense set the tone early with a three-and-out. Mullin would strike again through the air, this time finding Drew Hill behind the defense on a 23-yard score. Wyatt Kendall added the extra point to make it 13-0.

The Eagle defense did not allow a first down in the first half, dominating the line of scrimmage. The hosts would go to the ground game to pound out more scoring. Kaden Childress got the ball on a jet sweep and raced 46 yards for the next score.

South Putnam would add one more in the opening quarter. Peyton Crickmore was next up, busting one loose on a 40-yard romp to make it 27-0 after the first.

To open the second quarter, Luke Switzer got into the scoring column, taking one in from 20 yards out.

Not to be denied, the defense then decided to score. Braden Staley stepped in front of a pass and dashed 24 yards untouched for the touchdown.

The Eagles were not done yet. After a ball control drive, Kaleb Owens busted through from three yards out and the romp was on. The defense added another score before the half, when an Edgewood snap went over the head of the quarterback and into the endzone to be recovered by the Eagle defense. The extra point made it 53-0 at the half.

“We came out and played. We ran the ball well, threw the ball well, played defense well. A good night for the seniors on homecoming,” South Putnam head coach Chuck Sorrell said.

With the running clock in effect, it was a quick second half. Staley gathered in his second interception of the night to set the Eagles up one last time. It took just one play as quarterback Mullin scrambled around the left side from 18 yards out. Kendall would add one more extra point to make it 60-0.

Edgewood broke up the shutout late in the final quarter. Running back Gabe Drew broke free on a 36-yard run to get the Mustangs on the scoreboard. They added the point after to make it final 60-7.

The South Putnam defensive dominated the game up front, allowing just 85 yards of offense, most of those coming in the final drive of the game.

“We’ve been saying all year that the defensive line and linebackers are the heart of this team and they’ve gotta take over games.” Sorrell added.

The Eagle offense was not bad either, rushing for 285 yards and throwing for another 138. Nine different players scored touchdowns tonight, showing a lot of different weapons.

Next, South will travel to West Vigo to take on the Vikings as they resume WIC play.
