Congressman Baird helps introduce bipartisan bill to advocate for farmers

Thursday, September 29, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Fourth District Indiana Congressman Jim Baird (R-Greencastle) and Congresswoman Cindy Axne (IA-03) Thursday introduced the Farmers Deserve Notification Act which gives farmers nine months to adapt to any new restrictions on pesticides.

“For the last two years, our nation’s producers have been forced to navigate supply chain issues and skyrocketing input costs which have seriously challenged their ability to feed and clothe the American people,” Rep. Baird said. “The EPA’s creation and rapid implementation of new regulations only further disrupts this vital industry, forcing farmers to adapt quickly at the detriment of their crops and conservation practices.

“Our producers need time to find alternatives which is why I’m proud to work with Rep. Cindy Axne to require the EPA to give our producers the time they need to adapt so they can continue supplying a safe and affordable food supply without interruption,” Baird added.

“I routinely hear from Iowa farmers about the need for certainty and predictability, especially with the recent supply chain issues stemming from the pandemic,” Rep. Axne said. “Rather than having to navigate last-minute restrictions on their inputs, this bipartisan and commonsense legislation will ensure farmers have enough notice on any modifications to their pest management practices while maintaining the EPA’s ability to act immediately when justified. The EPA plays an important role in protecting our environment, and I’ll continue to support practical ideas to ensure their efforts work with, not against, Iowa’s family farmers.”

The Farmers Deserve Notification Act would prevent the EPA from canceling, suspending, or enacting new restrictions on pesticides without first providing a 270-day advance notice in the Federal Register.

If new data or science demands restrictions to go into effect sooner, the 270-day requirement can be waived by a majority vote of the independent FIFRA Scientific Advisory Panel.

The Farmers Deserve Notification Act is supported by the Indiana Corn Growers Association, Indiana Soybean Alliance, Indiana Farm Bureau, the Agricultural Retailers Association, the American Soybean Association, American Sugarbeet Growers Association, California Specialty Crops Council, Iowa Soybean Association, National Association of Wheat Growers, National Agricultural Aviation Association, National Onion Association, National Sorghum Producers and North Dakota Grain Growers Association.

  • Baird to farmers: Don't you worry my precious, I'll take care of you so that you and your workers will never suffer any hardships or go without. never fear, Baird is here

Baird to the rest of the working class: all you lazy welfare queens can take your evil socialism and drop dead

  • Drop dead?

U think the welfare transfers have helped build healthy environments?

Those communities are fever swamps of liberal-leftist destruction of families.

The CCP couldn't have designed it any better.

Friends of the Big Government enable the political class to be bought off for voting for more government spending.

    Sound familiar?

    Looked in the mirror lately?

  • I am amazed when people don't like food producers

  • What money is being spent here?

  • People might point out how good teachers have it because they get all summer break off work, and all the breaks and holidays during the school year. But that pales in comparison to the free time a crop farmer has. We're supposed to protect every aspect of the farmer's job and make sure that they always get their money. But when I have a bad year and need extra money I'm supposed to get a second and 3rd job. Why can't these farmers grab their own boot straps, fix their own problem? Then we shine them up by calling them food producers, so that all the con-servative republicans can justify all the government assistance and free money they give to their voting base, I mean food-producers. Yet another glorified person with a job that I'm supposed to treat like they're better and more important than me.

  • This bill is all about saving money for farmers and making their job easier. Go back outside

  • I will be respectful in my disagreement. The bill is not perfect and leaves some concerns. I am willing to cede those as the bill overall is practical sense and still meets future objectives.

I am in this industry so I would encourage you to read the bill and not allow your hatred and bias against a politician and people group be the basis of your opinion.

I understand why as the SLSCLS theology and the leaders of such theology really doesn’t encourage self discovery.

  • The Republican Party, in general, and specifically in Indiana, is not and has not been representative of conservative ideals. The people don’t care about the hot topic of the day. The people want proper representation and we don’t get it from Baird, or the Republican Party, or the democrats.

  • Umm hey beg, this bill is still under review and isn't even available to the public yet. I guess you read a leaked copy?

-- Posted by Raker on Mon, Oct 3, 2022, at 5:47 PM
  • Not a leaked copy but a draft of key elements for review which is very common.
