CLAYTON – Even with zero substitutions available, Bethesda Christian put up a stern resistance against Greencastle in the second semifinal of IHSAA Girls’ Soccer Class A Sectional No. 41 Thursday night.

Eventually, waves of Tiger Cub attacks told, getting a goal in the first half and two in the last 21 minutes of the second half for a 3-0 win over the Patriots to advance to the sectional final.

The first Tiger Cub shot of note came from Riley Wainman, who shot wide but forced keeper Paige Vawter to dive into action after 10 minutes.

A minute later, Wainman scored the opening goal after Ali Dobbs forced Vawter a parry a shot wide, the junior first to the ball before splitting a pair of bodies from a tight angle for a 1-0 lead.

Bethesda Christian started the match the better of the two teams but faded into a defensive shell as time went on and 10 minutes after the opening goal, Evelyn Briones took a ball from Carissa Trigg and slammed it off the post.

Dobbs had a free kick narrowly clear the crossbar 10 minutes later with a few other chances sprinkled in as the Tiger Cubs took their 1-0 lead into the break.

The Patriots came out strong again to start the second, Eden Swan managing to bring a brief bit of panic out of Bella Monnett after the Greencastle keeper briefly lost track of the ball.

Briones had a shot parried away after being teed up by Wainman before looping a cross from Aleeyah Johnson over the bar.

While most Tiger Cub attacks went down the flanks, the second goal came with some sharing across the middle of the pitch.

A prolonged passing move between Johnson, Dobbs, Wainman and Briones ended with Dobbs getting an angle to fire from outside the box, the ball tailing away from Varter and in to double the lead with 21 minutes to play.

Bethesda Christian tried to answer back with a weak Swan shot furthered on by Eve Collins but still within the reach of Monnett.

Trigg had a pair of chances that were thwarted by Varter before Dobbsd finally sealed the win with five minutes to play.

Dobbs had actually committed a foul that led to a Patriot free kick, one that Stephanie Morales cleared to Wainman, whose through ball gave Dobbs plenty of room to run on to and kept Varter rooted to her box, allowing the Tiger Cub sophomore the space to beat the Patriot keeper for her second strike.

Greencastle advanced to the Class A Sectional No. 41 Saturday, where it fell to hosts Cascade 1-0, finishing the season 11-3-3.
