Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated a pair of recent property-damage crashes.

• At 5:29 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6, Alvin C. Schuh, 56, North Salem, was at a complete stop on State Road 236, facing east in a 2009 Ford Crown Victoria. Schuh was waiting for a westbound vehicle to pass before he turned left into a driveway. A van was also stopped behind Schuh’s car.

Thomas W. Plemons, 61, Roachdale, was approaching eastbound on a 2003 Harley-Davidson FLS. Not able to get stopped in time to avoid the van, Plemons instead veered left, crossing over the centerline of the road.

At the same time, Schuh began turning left into the driveway, with Plemons colliding with the driver’s-side front fender of Schuh’s car. After contact, Plemons was thrown from the motorcycle, suffering injuries to his face, head and a finger and a fractured hip. He was transported from the scene by Air Evac to Methodist Hospital, where he underwent surgery the following day.

Reserve Deputy Commander Ken Rozelle reported that skid marks from Plemons’ motorcycle ran for 135 feet up to the point of impact.

The motorcycle was towed. Rozelle estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 1:46 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6, Darin K. Badger, 56, Greenwood, was westbound on County Road 375 North just east of County Road 800 East in a 2014 Chevrolet Express box truck registered to Hubler Chevrolet.

Badger told Cpl. Brian Helmer he had just pulled out of a driveway and became distracted while trying to fasten his seat belt. In doing so, he hit a bridge, which ripped the rear axle and driveshaft off the vehicle. The truck came to rest in a wheat field.

The truck was towed. Helmer estimated damage — including to the crops — at $10,000-$25,000.
