Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated a pair of recent property-damage crashes.

• At 8:15 p.m. on Saturday, Chloe E. Croan, 16, Fillmore, was eastbound on County Road 50 South in a 2008 Hyundai Sonata when she hit a deer.

Reserve Deputy Joe Tesmer estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 5:17 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9, Craig D. Hinshaw, 68, Coatesville, was northbound on Heritage Drive in a 2008 GMC Sierra.

The reporting party told Cpl. Brian Helmer that Hinshaw’s truck left the road, hit a mailbox, continued northbound through a yard and went airborne over a driveway before becoming disabled. The witness advised that Hinshaw left the scene then returned to tell the witness one of his employees would come back and pick up his vehicle.

When Helmer arrived, the witness said he had been following Hinshaw and that prior to the crash he was weaving on the road, nearly hitting a motorcycle at one point.

Deputy Josh Clark went to Hinshaw’s nearby residence and escorted him to the scene. When Helmer opened the door to get Hinshaw out, he noticed a strong odor of alcohol. Helmer then conducted field sobriety tests, then a portable breath test, with the results showing at .189 alcohol concentration equivalent, more than twice the legal limit.

Hinshaw was booked in the Putnam County Jail for driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a property-damage crash.

The truck was towed. Helmer estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.
