INDIANAPOLIS — North Putnam’s FFA dairy judging and parliamentary procedure teams recently earned Gold rankings in competition at the National FFA Convention.

The dairy judging team, coached by Sarah Correll, was made up of Seth Ariens, Katie Fry, Emma Bayless and Brant Sheldon. Ariens, Fry and Sheldon were also part of the state-winning parliamentary procedure team, but could only compete with one.

The team placed second in the state competition in June, which qualified them for the national contest. As the first-place team deferred the placement, North Putnam represented Indiana at the convention.

Along with its Gold ranking, the team placed fifth overall in the nation in the dairy judging competition. Ariens and Fry were also named Gold individuals, and Bayless and Sheldon were named Silver individuals.

The parliamentary procedure team was made up of Jayden Simpson, Handley Everman, Alaina Chew, Ruby Sullivan, Carter Thomas and Levi O’Neal. Many of them were also on North Putnam’s state-winning novice team in 2019.

The team won the state competition in January, and this was the first state win in the event in North Putnam’s history.

As for the national competition, North Putnam’s team is only the second one from Indiana, the first being Tri-County, in the contest’s history to advance to the semi-final round. With its Gold ranking, the team placed in the top 12 overall.

Simpson, Everman, Sullivan and Chew also earned statuses as accredited parliamentarians by the Society for Agricultural Education Parliamentarians for their individual scores.

  • My hat is off to the students representing NP in these very difficult contests. The level of competition at the national contest is top shelf and the accomplishment of the individuals involved should merit special recognition. If any athletic team in Putnam Co. should win at the national level, a school holiday and a parade would take place to honor the athletes.

Please recognize the significance of the awards earned by these outstanding students. My hat is off to Kate Skirvin and Jana Oxford for their over the top work ethic to make the NP FFA program top tier.

  • I agree 100% with rawinger. FFA is a very importance part of students lives and beyond. They never get the recognition as sports players. I fought this continually at another county school. It’s not the newspaper, acknowledgment comes from the school.
